Seam Treatment On Canvas

Postby sheeres » Thu Nov 17, 2016 9:19 am

When buying canvas from HF, there usually is a seam down the middle. Most people cut the seam apart. Has anyone NOT cut the seam? If the seam is not cut, are there any problems with the seam not laying down properly when glued up with TB? Looking for experience, not theory here.

I used Harbor Freight drop cloths. the sewn seam is real thick so i cut it off.
At the seams on the tear, I overlapped the canvas about an inch.
Glued it down w/ titebond and painted. worked ok for me.
The seams are on the roof (7' off the ground) and just above the doors on the side.
No one has noticed or at least haven't commented on them.

I left the seam in place without cutting it when I was wrapping the church steeple two years ago. The seams don't cause any problems other than looks, and the extra agravation of making sure they are sitting flush as the adhesive, (in this case I used paint instead of TBII) cured.
You can't see the seams from the ground, so it doesn't bother me.

As long as the seams are laid out neatly , they’re really not that objectionable ... If you have a really thick fabric, be sure to “size" the canvas before painting , especially on the seams...
There’s no place like Foam !
