3mm (1/8") Baltic birch plywood source in southeast?

Postby kokomoto » Thu Dec 01, 2016 2:17 pm

Can anyone recommend a supplier for 3mm Baltic birch? The local hardware store doesn't carry it, and says that their supplier can't get it. However, they tell me they have folks wanting it. Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham are all a reasonable drive.

Thanks!

I am not in your area, but try to check hardwood suppliers who catter to cabinet makers and such. That is how I found my build ply.

Perhaps a little south to be reasonable for you, but maybe it will help others.

I struggled to find a source for 1/4" 5x5 sheets for my project, but finally stumbled on this place local to me. I called yesterday and they had 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" baltic birch in 5x5 sheets in stock. Saves me some headache for sure. Definitely call around in larger markets to specialty woodworking shops. I had no luck with the major lumberyard supply companies.

My post should have read: The local hardwood store doesn't carry it, and says that their supplier can't get it.

Thanks for the reply. I need to proof read more often.

I may have a lead on a hardwood store in Nashville that stocks what I need.

I think I found the winner in Nashville. They even seemed suprised that Chattanooga Hardwood didn't stock it, nor could they get it.

though i realise this is not what you specifically asked for BUTT...

yesterday i bought 2 sheets of what is labeled as "2.7mm LUAN" (which i question) for $9.97/4x8 sheet at the ORANGE BIG BOX STORE(the BLUE store doesn't carry it)

i use this stuff for making patterns/templates in my boat building projects where i will be needing to make several like parts and where i hope to some day build again

it is real flimsey when not weighted down butt lays well when asked

as for it really being LUAN i think not

the grain is too close & the fingernail test tells me it is a very HARD WOOD

it does not splinter like softwood when i cut it w/ the 24tooth 4-1/2" circular saw

the grain patterns are quite attractive to me and IMHO would be beautiful varnished

Image

the tag/sticker said MADE IN CHINA so there is no way to know what type of glue is used and therefore should only be used for interior parts

this information may offer you an option

GOOD LUCK W/ YOUR QUEST

Is there a Lumber 84 store near you, they might carry it.

Thanks. I'll follow up on that, otherwise I have an excuse to head up to Music City.

Check Scrounger's Paradise in Asheville, NC. If you don't see it on their web site, call them. Their stock changes often.
