Charcoal Stove

Postby Tomterrific » Wed Dec 21, 2016 8:51 am

I've been pondering a small stove design for heat since some of my favorite camping sites have been non electric. My small stove became a charcoal stove for safety and convenience. I can't remember who I should give credit but I saw that a Wiley Window could have it's glass replaced with any panel.

My design would have a steel panel for the window. A box would be welded to the inside of the panel. The outside of the panel would have the door to the stove. A short chimney would be removable on the outside. Charcoal briquettes could be dropped in through the chimney. A thin fiberglass insulation on the outside would save the heat for the camper.

This is just a random idea for cold weather. If we have electric, we use an electric blanket. Cozy! :-)

This is our solution to heat.It is in a small standee. The door has a gasket and the combustion air comes from underneath. We generally burn charcoal and a load in the firebox will last overnight. the biggest trick to it is getting a fire started enough that it doesn't go out, then cutting the air way back so it doesn't run too hot.The fourth picture is the ash dump and air intake under the trailer./Users/StephenPearl/Desktop/DSCN1052.jpg146407146408146409146410[album

These are neat ideas for heating a trailer. But burning wood or charcoal gives off carbon monoxide, which can be deadly in a confined space. How do you make sure you're safe? CO alarm?

This is essentialy a air tight wood stove. With the combustion air coming from the outside ,the door being sealed and the chimney taking the gasses out the top , no carbon monoxide should be in the cabin.however there is a carbon monoxide alarm[white box lower right first photo]. I should add that the firebox is suspended so that there is a air gap between it and the sides and back so that the stove never gets extremely hot to the touch.

I would not burn anything without venting. Replacing a Wiley window with my stove idea keeps the entire intake and exhaust outside. The back of the stove is welded to the Wiley plate and is completely sealed. The only thing in the camper is heat.

Cool little stove Corgi. Is it homemade ? Nice stove either way.

BTW. Thanks to Kenneth W for the Wiley window replacement panel idea.

The stove is homemade.the main body of it is a propane tank.I agree with you about the venting issues, on a homemade device like this they need to be the first priority.

138445 here is one way to put a fully vented heater into a wiley window. That is a big stainless steel dog dish glued to cement board with high temp silicon glue.

Would love to see a picture of the heater outside to get an idea of how that worked.
