Three's a crowd

Postby Dashunde » Fri Jan 06, 2017 8:59 pm

I'm in the early stages of my teardrop plan and I'm a bit stumped... where to put a bunk for my 4 year old (and growing fast) daughter?

I want to stick with a relatively simple aluminum/ply teardrop with a mostly flat'ish roof (possible a/c unit) and mostly flat'ish front panel with a gentle radius into the roof.
Same for the rear.. a gentle bowing hatch.
A queen size bed is a must.
I'm shooting for the 5x9 range?

Where are the rest of you putting your kid(s)?

I would go 5'x9 1/2' (18" overhanging the front) with a straight galley wall(no cabinets) and put a 2' x 5' bunk over your feet.

Ive been planning a build for a while now and have a little one as well. Ive decided (for myself atleast) that the best option for a bunk is at the rear of the teardrop perpendicular to normal sleeping position in a teardrop. Ill sacrifice a little kitchen space out back to extend what is essentially the countertop into the main cabin of the trailer to act as a bunk. I figure that if my trailer is 5' or 5.5' wide then my daughter will be able to use it for years before being too tall.

It does seem that above our feet is the only sensible place to put a small bunk...

Been rethinking the rooftop a/c thing.. too big, too pricey for most.
I'll probably go with the $150 window/boxy type, and a fan in the roof instead.
The kids bunk will kind of interfere with the a/c box placement?

I'v always admired this build to solve the add-a-kid kid problem: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=59086&start=195

Check out the "Scad a Bout" trailer built in 1967.
Great design for Teardrop Trailer enthusiasts that like camping and have 1 or 2 kids.
Can't for the life of me see why these did not take off in popularity????

I really like your layout.. a lot. Great use of space... 4 people, full galley, storage and a/c.

What is your side panel height?

Thanks! I can't find many pictures of the a/c window unit installed on the drivers side of trailer. In this picture, there is a flip up door next to window. I install a/c when I arrive and depart from campsite.146539

We are empty nesters, but there was a family in the campground last season that had a teardrop with a rooftop tent. One parent was in the TD with one child and the other parent was in the RTT with the other. Their plan was to get back together when the kids got old enough to spend the night in the RTT alone.

I have a crosswise bunk across our feet for my kiddo. the tear is 5 wide so there is PLENTY of room for her at 18 months. and there is tons of room to grow into it. we currently have a pack n' play style mattress cover over two of the visible memory foam chunks on one side of the bunk, it takes up about 3/5th of the length, leaving the other two feet for our duffels. when my little girl isn't so little any more, we will extend the bed space of the bunk. I do still need to figure out a workable cabinet situation that leave room for the bunk, but as pictured got us through a week long thanksgiving roadtrip well.

edit- oh, mine ended up being a 5x10 benroy because it provided plenty of room for a bunk. I feel like we would be tight trying to fit the bunk into a smaller tear and still ending up with usable space in the galley, ext. doable, but tight.

We regularly fit 3 in mine, including a 12 year old (right about 5'). 4 in a pinch (one on the bed in the middle)

I have no internal cabinets, but a comfy "kid bunk" over the feet of mom and dad.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.
