Decision time - windows vertical or horizontal?

Postby les45 » Thu Jan 26, 2017 8:28 am

Should the windows in our hard wall pop-up project be vertical or horizontal? The wife and I can't agree on this one so I'm going to put it to a vote here on the Forum.
(these are fixed windows so orientation is not an issue)

Are they sliding windows? If so, they generally slide sideways. If there are weep holes on one side, they go at the bottom.

Edited original post to explain that these are fixed windows; orientation is only an aesthetic issue.

For now, just two windows; one in the panel in the pic and one in the panel directly opposite on the other side. Those are over the dinette area. Nothing over the bed area to the left of the door. May add two in the front end walls later. We will not be spending a lot of time inside except on rainy days and at night so two wall panel windows and the door windows should provide plenty of light. Also don't want to have to mess with a bunch of curtains inside.

I would do vertical in the position shown, and be tempted to do a horizontal in the panels on the other side of the door as it looks like a wider panel.

But I'm odd, so fwiw :)

Since you are using it for the dinette area the view would be better going horizontal. The outside look is a tossup.

I think vertical looks best.

 I like the horizontal. However, three things to think about are:

1) You'll want the bottom of the window to be even with or higher than the back of the dinette bench chairs.
2) If you put the window in horizontally, you'll be able to see more horizontally without straining to look.
3) If the window is made to slide sideways and you put it in vertically, you'll need to add drainage for the window channel, at its "bottom".

And the winner is: I decided to go horizontal. That is what my wife wanted in the first place and, after seeing the mockup in the pics, it does look better. I've got all the frameworks ready so I just have to cut the holes in the plywood and fasten everything together today. BTW - the ends will get sloping walls that will extend from the bottom edge of the roof to a shelf that will extend about 15" beyond the top edge of the bottom shell. That gives us a lot of shelf space inside on both ends and breaks up the cube look. I'll be updating my journal in a few days with pics of the panels installed.
Thanks to everyone who provided input.
