interior height average

Postby ibbowhunting » Mon Jan 30, 2017 10:46 pm

I was wondering if I could get a few people to post the interior height (finished height from the top of the bed to the ceiling) of there non standy type trailer, also comment if its to short, to tall or just right in your opinion, trying to find a base line for interior height

I was working on this very question earlier tonight, I was sitting in my garage on the floor with a 4x8 sheet of ply next to me , picturing my 5' wide floor with a 48" height, it felt claustrophobic to me. I then clamped a 1x6 across the top (making inside height 54") and it felt mucho better. I am now setting my inside height around 53-54 " and using that as a hard point in my design. I think the trade off in aero, work and weighrt is worth 5-6" more in height. My .02

I used standard 4X8 ply for my side walls on my weekender. The roof thickness was 2" and the insulated floor was 1.5". That resulted in a floor to ceiling height of 44.5". I used a 4" foam topper for a mattress so my total head room was 40.5" (actually more than that as you do sink into the foam more when sitting or kneeling). I'm 5-10 and that was plenty of room for me. I would point out that the weekender style with the flat roof not curving down into the interior space does give you more room on the inside. It did not feel claustrophobic at all but the inconvenience of getting dressed while laying down caused me to start my next project as a standy.

I added a strip of plywood to the bottom of my walls that got covered with a trim board. It gave me a full 48" inside. It feels very comfortable to us.

Anything more then 48" floor to ceiling would make it hard to open or close the top vent when siting down. Do you really want to get out of a warm bed to kneel on the bed to change the vent in the night?
I would rather just sit up change the vent or fan speed and go back to sleep. One of the nice things of a teardrop is everything is at a arms length.
PS Have the light switches where you can turn them on or off when lying down.

Good to hear from others that have the 48" and lower height, real world experience trumps my sitting on the floor in my Garage next to a sheet of ply. Thanks, I am rethinking and will mock up a 48" roof before I actually join wood . :)

Everything is reachable in my trailers' 48" high x 46.5" wide x 75"long sleeping quarters. Designed and built for ease of use. But, I forgot to consider the future. When I would become older and inflexible. That day has come; I haven't camped in nearly two years (because of several things), one of which is that I now have trouble moving around inside the trailer. I need to add grab-handles on the inside walls, and a device overhead to maneuver in-and-out of bed. A bad back and shot knees made my unconventional sleeping position (head near the bulkhead, feet at the doors), hard to use. Changing clothes inside has become nearly impossible.

What worked for me at first, no longer suits my needs now. I know why standies are so popular; also why second builds are rarely true original teardrop sized (old-school 4x8).

To change clothes.
I hang a beach towel over the door and sit in the door.
A clip on each side of the door so the towel hangs loose so you can stand behind it.
It does the trick.

My walls started at 48" high, - the ceiling,1.75", - floor, 2.25", - mattress, 6", equals about 3 feet 10 inches. Wow! But I'm 5'4", wife is 5'1". We crawl in and sit down with no issues. Doesn't feel claustrophobic at all! There's plenty of room to move. My TD is 5 wide. Interior is 5' x 76"(?) What ever a queen mattress is, that what I made the interior size. I consider it a perfect size. All your going to do is sleep basically. That's where an attached screened in tent comes handy for getting dressed and if needed, sit the rain out! We get dressed, get out and go to the restrooms/shower. Not really into roughing it yet. It's still a learning experience for us. We were only looking for a way to keep dry, off the ground, and mobile. Really disliked the pop up camper we had, too much set up, and still was damp all the time. This is much better! Good luck with your build! Check out my build if you want a visual. viewtopic.php?f=50&t=53430

I'm 5'2" and have a 48" clearance inside my trailer. I didn't want to feel too claustrophobic either so I measured some clearance over my head to be able to dress easily and brush my hair :) and that's what I went with.

I'm 6'4" tall and will have a queen sized foam mattress inside my teardrop. The interior height of my 5' 4" W x 10' L teardrop from the floor surface to the ceiling will be 48". I'll use 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood cut down to 53" high on the outside. Baltic Birch plywood is usually 5' x 5'.

I'm right at 6' tall, and I built mine with the usual 48" ply, lost about 1.75" to the roofline (1x2 roof spars and 2 sheets of 1/8" birch), and about 2" to the floor(2x2 frame +1/2" ply). I have a 4" foam mattress, and I can sit up on the side wall out of the curve without issues. I have a little trouble changing pants, but nothing that is too difficult if I squirm around a bit.

In the next tear I think I will go for a bigger option (probably campster 12) and do a standie rather than a normal tear, but I love the little one the way she is.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I spent a lot of time on that issue- being retired, I wanted more height inside to make it easier on the back and knees. -I made my own 1.5x 1.1" studs 5ft long from 10ft 2x6s- interior height was 61.5". I am 5'8" tall.

Campy McCampface is about 5' 2" inside, but it's not a conventional teardrop shape by a long shot. I had a Tag owner come in and just about cry at being able to almost stand up! "This makes it possible to comfortably change your pants," he wept.
