Making a stronger door.

Postby saywhatthat » Tue Apr 11, 2017 3:04 pm

Making a stronger door. Received two light doors need to up grade them.
As many here have better ideals than I.
Plan no windows in doors. Will leave the long hinge adding a six-inch ice box hinge
Install heavier door lock. Thinking of better skin on the outside of door. Not to infringe on the seal
What might you do?

That's a helluva of a skeleton camper there.

When you say "stronger" door, do you mean able to bear stronger weight (better hinge), or less flimsy?

Those look like repossessed RV baggage doors. Not sure what your budget is, but you can get 1-1/2-inch thick baggage doors rather than standard 3/4-inch ones if you want maximum rigidity.

Andrew thanks for stopping by
Yes their repossessed RV baggage doors. Trying for less flimsy. This will be light sleeper. Need a door that would clear the fenders. These where free. To get doors shipped out here cost more than the doors. Will trade out for different doors latter

Too true on shipping costs. Doors are ridiculously expensive.

I'm not coming up with anything more creative than riveting a powder-coated steel or aluminum plate to the door. Attach it to the back, and it's hidden. Attach it to the front, and you improve dent resistance - or at least get a sacrificial facade.

A lot of those baggage doors have mounts for small gas struts. Or you can add them. A strong gas strut would help the door stay stable during strong winds.

Make a sandwich with plywood on the inside and FRP on the outside.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. Are you wanting to make new doors or just modify the old ones?

I like to just modify the old ones. This trailer is short. I first planed a door in the back. It got changed .So need some doors to clear the fenders. When I stared this trailer. Thinking may two weeks. Tree roots failed. My small two bed room home became a one bed room..Now it becoming A four bed room. So most time is spent on the house. So trying to save some time. I am doing two different styles of trailer frames. Need all the Short cut I can find. Will brace the frame and add a outer skin.
Thank you for all your help.Sadly started on the driver side. Wish It was the passenger side . There be one door
