Minimalist Tears

Postby mikejohn37 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 5:31 am

I have designed a squarish camper for my own use. 8 x 4 x 4 roughly.

The front and side hatches are for access to the cabin and for extra ventilation in hot weather during the day. They will be fly-screened. The size of the side hatch is to suit a small air-conditioner and a removable shelf is for that purpose or it could be another pass through opening/table. Maybe it is a crazy idea. The air conditioner only comes camping in hot/cold seasons and is carried in the car.

The bed space is 78 inches long and 44 inches wide. Cosy. It could widen to 5ft but it is meant to be a low cost build and you get more out of plywood at 4ft wide.

The rear hatches are removable rather than lift up so I can park under low trees and they also will have legs and serve as camp tables.

It is a low cost build. No electrics - just camping lanterns etc. I will have an electrician put in one ac outlet if they will.

Questions? Comments?

My only addition would be a roof top vent with fan and a simple 12v system to power it.

nice design. I like the cables from the top to hold the shelf. and using the covers as tables? ingenious! I'd only be worried about how to seal the openings when closed up. you might find that adding the molding to hold the seals will increase the complexity of the build (I sure did!)

I say go for it! let us know how it comes out.

Thanks for the comments. Now I have to build it. :-) I am going to fibreglass the outside of the walls and tape the outside joints. I need to credit only taking the aircon when needed idea to Coyote.

Yes I have designed a diy hatch with a fan. Also, some air intakes as well. The hatch is the first thing I will make while I wait for other materials.

Suggestion. For the back, which may be your kitchen, or a place to store other gear. Gather up what will go there, measure and fit accordingly. For example, if you have a camp stove, make sure the depth of your shelf will accommodate it. If you have a specific type of water jug, make sure you can accommodate it.

My TD is minimal to say the least. When I built the thing, it was single purpose, to hunt out of in cold weather. Since I thought I wouldn't be using it much in the summer, I didn't bother putting a DC converter in, figuring that the Campgrounds I intended to use would have AC. So I just put a plain vent in my roof and had a window in the door and a window on the other side for fresh air. In the winter all you need is the vent and a window cracked to keep from suffocating in your sleep. In the Summer, not enough air moves to make camping in warm weather much fun. Then I discovered a 9 inch AC Fan from Wal Mart that I can tie to the roof vent that turns the TD into a mini wind tunnel. Makes using it in the Summer Heat with AC bearable.

It is almost done. Filling holes, fibreglassing, sanding and painting to go and then fit all the hardware - locks, seals etc.
