Bendable Birch Plywood

Postby Atomic77 » Fri Jul 07, 2017 4:05 pm

Hi Folks...

At one point I had the name of a guy on this forum that was a salesman for a company that sold cabinet grade bendable birch plywood. Now that I'm ready for it I can't find the contact info anywhere. Wondering if someone on here might know the fella or possibly the company that sells the stuff. I think it also went by the term "wacky wood" or something like that. I'm building cabinets with curved ends and need something that will easily make the bend. I appreciate any help you all could pass along!

Michael, you might try L.L. Johnson in Charlotte, Mi. http://www.theworkbench.com/

I've used their 'barrel bend' birch to a 6" radius. http://www.theworkbench.com/plywood.php#bunkply

Thank you Fred! I have some questions for you. I found the 3/8 Lauan Barrel bending plywood, but I don't see anything that says "Birch." I don't see any others listed? Also, is it expensive to have it shipped? does it ship flat in a 4x8 sheet? Sounds costly. Thank you for your help!

Hey Mike. I assume you need the whole sheet. I was thinking that maybe someone with your talent might use a wood veneer on top of whatever you could get locally. I am sure you could come up with some interesting designs. http://www.veneersupplies.com/products/ ... 4-x-8.html

I've actually tried that before on other projects. On a tight radius the veneer just doesn't stick as well as I would like. Sometimes it will bubble especially on a bend and subjected to the drastic temperature range a camper will experience. I just don't want to take that chance, but trust me I considered it! Thanks for the input!

Michael, Like you, I searched the greater Grand Rapids area in vein until a company that supplies the furniture industry put me on to L.L. Johnson. Called first, went with utility trailer and picked up 1/8" x 4 x 8 barrel bend birch & 1/8" x 4 x 8 regular birch plywood. They showed me around and allowed be to go through the stacks for patterns that I liked.

Another trailer was to be a painted interior, so the pattern didn't matter. They shipped the same order on it's own pallet for free along with other orders to a depot in Grand Rapids for pick up.

I see that they do ship to your town. http://www.theworkbench.com/delivery.php

So on both questions, I'd suggest calling. They where helpful to me and I found it an interesting place to visit.

Good luck, Fred

Play nice boys... LOL!

Well Fred I called L.L. Johnson today... It is a no go. They no longer carry the Birch in bendable ply. I wondered when I didn't see it specifically listed. He told me the barrel ply is a lauan which is a mahogany family product. Apparently the supplier hiked the price to triple and they quit carrying it. The salesman suggested venier, but when I said it was a camper he changed his mind pretty quick. He has seen first hand the bubbles that occur as a result of the temperature changes in a camper. So now I'm back to square one...

Bummer. Guess I should have bought a whole stack.

Another place to call: http://www.fingerlelumber.com/

http://www.fingerlelumber.com/products/ ... ng-plywood

BTW, I guess we're supposed to call barrel bend 1/8 x 8 x 4, rather then 1/8 x 4 x 8 (column bend).
