Coleman Point Loma dome canopy

Postby Schnooglebug » Mon Jul 24, 2017 8:35 am

We're looking for a good canopy for our teardrop. We're thinking of Coleman's 15x15 Point Loma Dome shelter, thinking that it would be more aerodynamically stable in the wind. Ideally we would like to park our 5x9 teardrop under it. I'm concerned that set up may be too cumbersome. Has anyone tried this before?
Our other option would be a 12x12 pop-up.

I have one but I have not used it over the trailer yet. I wanted the larger size for more coverage for sitting under the canopy and have the trailer under it.

I've only set it up once. While I've never done and EZ up before, this dome is almost certainly more involved. I think it would be quite a chore for one person and it is something I wouldn't put up for if I was just going to be somewhere for a day or two.

I am going for a four day trip in a few weeks and I will be putting it up then because where I am going is hot with no shade :). I'll update when I do.

Edited to.add: it does have a vent in the top so I think it would do well in wind.

We have a similar Coleman Dome, an Event 14, that the Hubs puts up by himself. It takes him 20 to 30 minutes because the supports are a bit cumbersome but the thing works like a champ in bad weather.

There was a time a few years ago when the then Coleman Event Shelter 14 and 15 were not sold in this country for whatever reason. I was convinced that design was the best for wind and good looks as well. It surely had way more square footage on the ground as well. They were still available in England so I got a 15 from there along with the ground sheet and three side walls and one side wall with a zippered door. The side walls clip onto the dome frame tubes. It has been a real pleasure. I set it up and then push the tear into the dome. I move the side walls around to protect from changing directions of the wind. It is very secure and aerodynamic. It has a blow up panel in the top middle which is to release the lifting effect of winds. I use the side panels to deflect higher winds also. I set it up alone and while not a breeze to do alone it is worth the protection. I do recommend heavier ropes and stakes on the four corners however. I love the thing.

When I had my teardrop I used a Kelty Carport canopy anchored to the top vent. It only covered one side but did provide some privacy to let one hang legs outside when getting dressed. I do not have a picture of it but a google search of "kelty carport canopy" images will show what it looked like. The current ones have side curtains which I did not have. I had the pop-up over the galley area.

All these cool solutions and only a few seem available. The Kelty carport doesn't seem to be available and finding the Coleman Event Shelter 15 isn't at the normal places. I like the idea of the Coleman with sides but the carport looks cool to though I don't know how I would mount it since my tear doesn't have a good rack.

Hopefully I figure something cool out like you folks.
Some day I will figure out something to put here. But for now....

Maybe a Coleman Event Shelter could be bought from Amazon.co.uk?

Try just entering "Coleman" canopy, shelter or dome in your search engine or go to the Coleman site. I found similar looking shelters on Amazon using "Coleman canopy" and "Coleman dome shelter". The "Coleman Point Loma" is the largest at 15 x 15. Good hunting. :)

I wonder if the sides from the event shelter 15 fit on the Loma. That's the same one I spotted.

Coleman Point Loma dome canopy

Postby mcubberley » Thu Aug 10, 2017 9:47 pm

I do like the simplicity of Kelty canopies as well but some walls would ease life a bit. Good thing fall is near so I have plenty of time to over research and obsess.

Coleman Point Loma dome canopy

Postby mcubberley » Wed Jul 04, 2018 1:42 pm

Finally set this up. Its good solution for me. Its the Coleman 2-in-1 shelter/tent. Its a perfect fit for the side of my 5x8 and the added half tent inside makes a good potty or dressing room. I am pretty Stoked. I would still like to eventually get one of these Kelty carports for the hatch though.

Disregard the sidewalks and the placement straps still connected. We are on a test run. About an hour for first time setup and teardown and repacking. I think it should only take us 15-20 minutes once the 2 of us get used to it.

So excited to try it out at McDowell Nature Preserve in Charlotte NC in the near future.

Thanks for the information on the Loma Dome. I am currently using REI Alcoves. which are good up to about 22 MPH winds - then they have to come down even with extra guy lines and stakes. The wind forces are just too much for them. I can leave the frame up but the cloth must come down or it will be destroyed.

The Beaufort Wind Scale https://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/beaufort.html

Would you know how much wind the Loma Dome can stand in? Thanks in advance.

Coleman’s site claims all tents and shelters are designed for up to 35mph.

I was looking at the Point Loma earlier today after getting a 25% coupon from Coleman today. I was turned off by the weight and time to set up. I ended up ordering the 10 x 10 instant screen house. Image
