Many (if not most) insurance companies will not insure homemade trailers or anything with a state assigned VIN. And if you are able to get one insured, I think it is highly unlikely you would be able to get an agreed value policy through a regular insurance company. Those who say they have an agreed value policy for their trailer may want to make sure that is the case. It could very well be a stated value policy. You can find this out by getting a copy of the specific policy for your trailer and checking to see if there is an endorsement that gives you agreed value coverage. Also check the part of the policy that tells how losses are settled. If they mention actual cash value and you don't have an endorsement stating losses are settled on the agreed value, then the policy is most likely stated value. In that case if the stated value of your trailer is $10,000 that is the absolute most you would be paid. However, the adjuster would try to come up with a value based on depreciation and you would most likely get less...possibly much less. Many people don't have an idea how their policy will cover a loss, and many times agents give wrong information. And at the time of a claim, things can really go wrong. Another thing you need to know is that if another driver is responsible for damage to your trailer, his/her insurance will only pay actual cash value. And you may be very unhappy with the value they place on your trailer. If you do indeed have an agreed value policy, then you would need to turn in a claim to your insurance to cover the rest.

Suddenly, all the work I've done on this build seem like it's for nothing...

You're not alone, many people don't research these issues in advance.

As, long as you have receipts for the expensive components, cover them as personal property under householder insurance?

Personally all I care about is liability, that's the one can really wipe you out,

Michael,

If I put as much as you did into my build, I would have
paid the difference to get insurance from State Farm.
My foamy build isn't worth much more than the
materials cost...... It would be easily rebuilt simpler.

Try Progressive INS.

We have a pontoon insured by them for an agreed amount.. It was damaged when I bought it.. redid it and covered for the cost I spent..

Talked to them about the tear drop.. We will be getting them to cover the tear drop also.. I will have to produce receipts.. Though I don't see a problem right now.. And neither does my agent...
Stay safe, David

Not sure about there but when I made enquires about insuring mine several companies directed me to some caravan valuation places.
You pay a fee of about 150 and fill out a bunch of details and your expected valuation and they do a valuation you can submit to the insurance company.
We have specialist caravan insurance companies here to

No! but I plan to for my new MGTF.
With Miss Piggy I have it insured through our B.C. Government Insurance (ICBC).
When I registered the trailer , got plates, and insurance......I was in and out of the insurance office in less then 10 minutes.
No receipts, no pictures, no inspection, no weight scale slip, ..........no nothing!
Declared the value, wrote the cheque. ;)

The world of "caravans" down under is a completely different alternative reality wrt legal requirements and insurance from the wild and woolie US. Basically the governments here say "do what you like with that bucket of bolts", it's your funeral.

Many states barely inspect trailers, very little regulations for safety or roadworthiness, even mains electric stuff can be done DIY.

So in effect the private insurance industry has to take all that risk on, and DIY is such a tiny market spread over 50 jurisdictions, they don't bother doing due diligence.

Easier to just say no.

Have you tried AIS ? I know they do all kinds of insurance including Bus Conversions so it might be an option.

I never thought about getting insurance on my build. It surprises me to learn I probably can't get it covered.
But no big deal. Had I known I would have built it anyway.
I know I'm a good risk so I guess I will just cover myself at The Insurance Company of Me. If some outlandish act of nature destroys it I will chock it up to bad luck and build another. If another driver hits me I will make them pay for their mistake in a civil suit.
If we are keeping the books acurately I guess we should
-decide how much premium we would be willing to pay each year
-drop that amount into an account each year
- let it build up to pay for any calamity
- have fun and go camping.

Best we could do was through our State Farm agent, they did it on a material costs only basis, no labor was covered.

If you were to sell it to a "straw man" & then buy it back for what it's actually worth (a receipt from the seller showing your purchase price) you might have the documentation needed to cover your costs. Just sayin'...
