Are HF & NT kits gone FOREVER?

Postby WizardOfOdds » Mon Apr 30, 2018 5:46 pm

First Red Trailer disappeared.
Then the HF family of trailers was suspended (as part of tire recall).
Now NT 4x8 and 5x8 (both steel and aluminum) are ‘No Longer Available’
(see http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=70314).

Of the 2 HF stores in my area, one removed the display model. The other maintains a large display with order cards but has none to sell.

It’s beginning to look like the end of the light weight kits. Here is one ominous sign: I asked if HF required stores to return their stock of trailers when they announced the tire recall; the answer I got was ‘yes'. So I think something far bigger than the tire recall is at play. The fact that NT has stopped all sales is just another reason to ask “are these light trailer kits gone forever?”

The pre-built alternatives (from NT, TS, Lowes & others) are not attractive to very light weight (500-700#) builders. Custom built options are difficult to title in many states and often too heavy and far more expensive in most metro areas (despite several claims I’ve read).

I think the market demand for the light weight kits remains pretty high, but I’m not sure HF or NT will see it. So I’ve asked (via email) HF when the trailer kits might be available again, and added that I would like to see them add a 5x8 foot model. Hope they respond soon with some encouragement, but I doubt my single letter will gather much attention. Without these kits, my plans are DoA.

I ordered a 5*8 last week from northern tool. Had to cancel on Saturday. Today I received an email from them that they could cancel my order, because they are on backorder. They may have sold a lot more due to HF situation

I heard rumors when they did the light and tire recalls that their HF trailer line was going to be revamped. I sold my Weekender-XL last month that was built of a HF frame. I needed a trailer to haul some household goods and decided to get busy. I had a used, $40, Northern Tool 40"W x48" L trailer that I had been modifying to use to haul a flat bottom boat- a 3 year project so far. I got busy and worked 4 solid days and finished it today.
It's now 40"W x 96"L, with the tongue extended two extra feet. It's now possible to back it up! I registered it as a homemade trailer- wow, it weights 165 lbs. Actually, the scale guy told me his scale starts at 300 lbs, he picked up the back and then the front- scratched his chin and declared it weighted 165lbs. I can lift the side and stand it up sideways.
I scavenged all the scrap angle, electrical strut, etc to use. People in this city throw plenty of stuff away. A lot of welding and treated plywood and it still came out to around $100. Harbor freight sent me a new set of LED lights last fall to use on the old trailer, but I never swapped them, so I used them on this trailer.
Now, I got to thinking- maybe could I built a small camper on this trailer? A scaled down Lemke Vardo design caught my eye.
