Door gap and hinge sealer.

Postby dancam » Sun May 06, 2018 6:25 pm

So on my back door i would like a seal over the hinge gap. It will keep dirt and water off my hinges and keep water out. Bicycle inner tube is easiest but i would really like it to be white. I would like to double-sided tape it on rather than screw it on as well.
Anyone know of any options of materiel to use in white? I am having trouble finding something.

vinyl baseboard/coving material might work. Most is formed with a curve a the bottom which can be simply cut off.

Camper's village in Edmonton may have white reinforced UV stabilized vinyl, or check Marshall fabrics in Edmonton as well.

I would get white EPDM membrane, sold by the foot http://www.bestmaterials.com/detail.aspx?ID=19694&gclid=Cj0KCQjwz7rXBRD9ARIsABfBl82zmo8GeRLZ70uedtpGCYgx582bY1r2OxpPUIBub3E4lsMI_m1VZJMaAhC4EALw_wcB You could order 1x20 ft, and do your top gap (I used a 12"x 52" piece of freebie conveyor belt, and it worked great; I would've used EPDM, but it wasn't free), and you'd still have plenty left over to cover your hinges, as well. And, since EPDM lasts a long time, you could have enough left after that, to do it all over again.

EPDM is a great idea. Check for local commercial roofing supply houses. I was able to find a place that had 6' and 20' rolls they would cut off. And with a 4" or 6" minimum width.

Dancam.... I used black EPDM to seal the hatch hinge, and plan to try white flex-seal tape over it. Not sure how UV resistant it is, or how long it stays flexible. Guess I'll find out..................jd

Heads up on Flex-Seal tape. I used a 4" wide white piece to cover the deteriorating "who knows what" the previous owner had used on the hatch hinge. It cracked clean through in the cold (below 20F for me) when we were at Bryce this past March. Now it's in the 100's here (AZ) and the "glue" is softening enough to flow, little rivulets of yellowish gook coming out of it and an inch or two down the hatch.

If your weather is mild - should be fine, but extreme temps seem to challenge it too much.

Shootr........Thanks for the heads-up. Scratch the flex-seal tape. The black EPDM is, of course UV resistant but ugly (might even say Butt-ugly  ). I'll keep nosing around for something to dress it up. Worst comes to worst, I'll leave as is.............jd

How much are you needing? I'm going to buy this http://www.bestmaterials.com/detail.aspx?ID=20902 and see how it works. I'll only use 5' of it at most - if it works out you're welcome to the rest of it.
