Camping, Columbus, Ohio to Norman, Oklahoma

Postby Tomterrific » Mon Jul 16, 2018 7:54 pm

We will drive from Columbus to Oklahoma soon. I am having trouble finding nice natural tear camping. We would like a state or national park. Is there any suggestions about half way?

Thanks,
Tom

Cant help with the midway point but if you remain in the Norman area Red Rock Canyon SP about one hour west has several dry camp sites and about 40 with water and electric. Also has modern bathhouses and toilets.

Many apps for finding parks and campgrounds. RV Parky, Free Camping, Oh Ranger, and REI's National Parks are ones ive played with.

Heres another US Forest Service interactive map. https://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/index.html Ive thought these were generally pretty nice.

There are a couple Missouri State Parks right off I-44 near your halfway point, including Meramec and Onondaga Cave. I stayed at Onondaga Cave SP last year and thought it was perfectly acceptable for a quick overnight.

I wanted to follow up on our trip and where we stayed.

The first stop was Lieber state park in Indiana. $7 to get in and $21 to camp in the non electric tent area. That is the senior price. Close to the freeway but not the greatest place.

We drove a longer time the second day and got in to OK. It was late but we made it to Twin Bridges state park. Easy to get there from the freeway. Cost was only $12 a night for non electric tent spot. The only bad was a road was detoured past the camp ground so it was noisier than I like. We were the only ones in the campgound so we had a shower house to ourselves.

We got to our friends house, had a great time talking until my wife got a phone call, her Mom died. The next day we drove 1000 miles home in one stretch. I can't recommend doing that.

Thanks for the suģgestions. I really want to spend some camping time in Missouri. It really looks beautiful. And they give out large print maps for old people!
