Minimal water dish washing

Postby Cosmo » Mon Aug 20, 2018 7:12 am

Getting grease off pans with cold water is pretty difficult.
I experimented on a 19 day trip boondocking my way round Lake Superior with this method and had excellent results in summer temps.
Of course there are other solutions to this problem so please share.

Nice technique for fast and easy cleaning, plus it's environmentally friendly!

The mixture of water+baking soda and then a rinse with vinegar is a well known grandma's technique when cleaning the oven. You make a paste out of water and baking soda, scrub the surface, let it stay, spray with vinegar, let it stay a bit longer and then clean up with a sponge. Rinse the sponge and you are done.
Of course for a nasty oven the amount of baking soda, water, vinegar and scrubbing is much more than for a pot recently used.
Here is an example for an oven:

A rafting guide friend recently taught me a new minimal water dish washing technique.

1. Scrape all the food into the garbage
2. Rinse the plate with plain water from an aerosol sprayer (in stream)
3. Spray with a weak soapy water solution from another sprayer
4. Scrub with reusable dish cloth
5. Spray with plain water until no soap remains
6. (and this is the key) Spray with restaurant-grade sanitizer, such as Star-San (available at homebrew stores)
7. Air dry (I put a dish towel over the dish rack to keep leaves etc. off.

I recently used this technique for my 20 day teardrop trip through British Columbia and was pleased with 1) the reduced amount of water consumed, 2) the reduced amount of work, no heating water, and 3) the cleanliness of the dishes. No greasy film from the rinse water.

I got through 20 days on the road with only 2-1/2 gallons of wash water.

The sanitizer is the key!

When I was a boy scout, we picked up a handful of sand, put it in the pot. Scrubbed the pot with that, then when it was essentially clean,we rinsed out the sand.

I have resorted to sand in the past but have since discovered what is living in the sand may decide to live in me!

Star San is a mixture of Phosphoric Acid and Dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid with a hefty price markup. Do not eat Star San. I used Star San for brewing and it worked well. I don't agree with their "no rinse" claim. I think I still have some and will use it up in the trailer. Star San is primarily a sanitizer. Vinegar provides some additional cleaning power. Many choices for all of us.

I like the price leaders Grandma could pronounce like baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acid) which present NO biohazard – even if sprayed on my salad or ingested for stomach acid (sodium bicarbonate) and work as well as the corporate laboratory offerings. ! just like like eatable stuff.

But I have to acknowledge the power tool approach and I am getting very curious about Slow’s toothbrush. Baw haw haw.

Choose what works best for you.

I am also a fan of the three spray bottle method. Except I use alcohol for sanitizing. BTW salt makes a good abrasive for cleaning pots.

Showers when I could get them in campgrounds. Spit baths next to the teardrop when I couldn't.

About a 1/4 cup of water to brush teeth in the morning and take daily meds.

I really do prefer to be cleaner, but living in the dirt (i.e., camping) makes that difficult unless there's a shower or hose nearby. One place I camped next to a stream, but when I looked at it closely, there was just too much stuff in it (bugs, garbage, oily film, etc.) for me to want to touch it.

Oh, and I don't drink water, I drink beer or coffee, and the water to make coffee is included in the 2.5 gal.
