Tongue Box Idea?

Postby DWT77 » Thu Aug 30, 2018 2:13 pm

Out of curiosity has anyone used or thought about using a patio HDPE Deck Box on the front of their trailer? Seems like it might be a quick/easy way to add a tongue box.

•Rigid double-wall high density polyethylene (HDPE) construction
•Controlled spring-hinge lid opens greater than 90° – won’t slam shut
•UV-protected panels and lid
•Weather- and water-resistant seal – helps keep interior dry
•Lockable lid
•Can be used as a bench
•130-gallon capacity
•Designed to accept do-it-yourself dividers or shelving

Similar idea. A Plano box. I made a rack for it from an old bed frame.

something to always remember when it come to tongue boxes - there is always a certain point where they can be 'just' too big!! the bigger they are - the more you end up carrying thus the 'more' the tongue weight ends up being!! The other problem a big tongue box can cause problems is when making a 'tight' turn (and/or backing up) a big tongue box can cause damage to the tow vehicle's quarter corners (haven't had this happen to me -BUT- I did get to watch this happen the one time I was waiting for a trailer in front of me to back into a campsite he had choice. Just something to think about  ..........................take care

On the 5X10 flatbed I just built, I used a HF (off the shelf) tool box due to time & convenience. It's a good compromise between a custom build & a factory made piece that works, quick & dirty. It's 12 3/4" high & 33 1/2" wide at the back & 14" front to back, good fit for a standard "A" frame tongue.

Pros: Easy & quick to install, I used self-tapping screws & butyl rubber tape on the frame where it sits
Fits a 50 degree tongue correctly with no modifications
Comes with the factory lock & is ready to set, once it's out of the box
Is fairly well made for the money, steel construction & has a lid lift cylinder from the factory

Cons: Cost $100 (after the coupon discount of 20%)
Weight is 45# empty, this adds a lot when full of stuff, if weight is a concern already....
Had to weather-strip the lid for a better seal, but now it seals well enough
