DMV Registration and Inspection

Postby greenchicken » Wed Dec 12, 2018 7:14 pm

I went to my AAA with my certification for my trailers.

They told me I can to bring it to the DMV for inspection. Fare enough.

I told them I was building a teardrop trailer on it. He gave me a 'look' and said that I had to complete the trailer build and then have the DMV inspect it.

Any recommendation on what I need to do, or not do, in order to make the inspection process as smooth as possible.

I am consider just building the deck and having them inspect it. Technically the tear drop is sitting on the trailer in the same way as a load of bricks would.

It's going to vary from state to state.

In Idaho, it needs to be inspected at the end of the project. It's been my experience that they are focusing on two primary things here: Making sure you didn't use stolen parts (the same inspectors chase chop shops) and that you need to write them a check for everything you didn't pay sales tax for.

I know that Some states include a safety inspection, but my doesn't

I'm sure you could get away with slapping a floor on it and then calling it a utility trailer. However, if you plan on insuring it this may become problematic.

No advice will be helpful that is not specific to **your** state.

Too true. When I built "homemade" campers, in Missouri, a mechanic's inspection of the trailer and a bit of paperwork sufficed for a VIN. In Utah, any homemade trailer with an estimated value in excess of $1,000 requires all receipts, build pictures and design information to be forwarded to Salt Lake City for review, a process which requires 6-8 weeks
