1947 TD coming home on the 26th, not sure of the make or mod

Postby bamsbbq » Tue Dec 25, 2018 1:11 am

I am not sure the exact make or model of it but according to the owner it is a 1947. I was going to build one and this one came along yesterday. The wife was going to buy me all the materials I needed to build one but liked this classic better.

It is coming home site unseen on Dec 26th, I have a GREAT wife!!! :)

I look forward to seeing this one.

Whether you're done or not, consider coming to the Shasta Lake Gathering at the end of April. (Look here in the Jefferson State segment.) You can get lots of ideas and feedback there.

Nice Find. The general shape is very similar to a 47 Modernistic or possibly a Cub. I think the top of the door should be curved if it's a Modernistic. Whatever it is it will be a fun teardrop.

The wife and I were actually looking at this gathering before we finalized on any TD purchase.

Oh, I hope it wasn't last spring, at the gathering that got renamed the Soggy Shasta Lake Gathering!!! There wasn't much to look at in the rain. A lot of people left Saturday morning because of the wet stuff.

We had the same thoughts. Picking it up got put off until the weekend. I am going to search around the garage it's stored in to see if they have more original parts.

even though i'm far from even slightly well versed in the history(manufacturer/age) of these little critters...

i am quite fond of the simplicity and shape of this unit

I'd say it's a Kit from the factory..but it has been rehabbed a few times.

Here's the story behind it.

It was bought originally in 1947 by the Sister. It was then passed on to the brother and has been in the family the whole time.

It was originally all white but the grey looking color which I thought was primer is actually what is the result of having the painted sandblasted off. It has an ice box on the left side of the galley with a 3 burner stove on a slider on top of the ice box. The galley shelves/counter,cupboard frame's have been rehabbed/repainted/had formica applied. The galley needs to be redone. The galley/hinge doesn't appear to have any seals.

The fenders appear to be aluminum as well as the roof skin. I am I undecided as to stain the outside walls or finish in aluminum. It appears to be missing a few pieces of trim on the bottom of the walls.

The interior hadesign some metal braces welded in different places. I am undecided as to keep or cutout. The PO also put some wooded framing on the inside and may have added a few too many adding more weight instead.

Now my search on the frame is to find a serial # somewhere and any manufacturers markings. It does have a Fulton on it.

More pics coming shortly

Since you have the California license plate, the DMV should have some of the information that you need for it, including vehicle ID#, assuming the license plate really belongs to that trailer (probably does). You should be able to call them and save going through those awful waiting lines. Or, you might try going to the CHP office and see what they can do for you. The CHP are really friendly and might help, dunnno.

We have a Moderistic that is basically like this trailer. But this looks like the sides are wood?? Our trailer is all aluminum, riveted together, and different fenders. The Cub trailers were sold in kit form and put together with machine screws and nuts. The one I saw had fenders different from ours. The hatch on this looks just like ours. Our door is square at the top. This is not a Moderistic, unless it's been modified, but I don't know what it is. A lot can get changed over 70 years.
