multiple 4x8 vs 5x10

Postby greenchicken » Mon Jan 14, 2019 3:15 pm

Now comes a major decision. my TD will be 9x4.5.

I can get 5x10 plywood
or
I can join up multiple 4x8.

The cost is not a consideration here, only the convenience of acquisition vs structural integrity.

The only place I can get 5x10 is about 90 minutes away... so where talk about 3 hours + to get it.

I'd rather not deal with that.

But is there is structural integrity benefit to using one piece that is worth the drive?

If you use half your intended thickness and 4 sheets you can get a very strong solution by off setting the joins so each is overlapped by the other full sheet.
For example you want 12mm walls buy 6mm sheets. Butt join 2 sheets at the rear and the other 2 at the front end of the trailer and glue all together to give a 12mm thick wall that is the intended length.

It depends on how you are building. If you choose a skeletonized plywood wall, no.

Agree with Tony on no difference in structural integrity.

Another consideration is time. The 3-hour commute may be less time then the time spent to graft multiple sheets of plywood together. Plus you won’t have to wait for glue or epoxy to set.

IMHO the time you'd save by not driving to pick up the full sheet(s) would be mostly if not more than consumed by the splicing process

multi-layer splicing can be as strong if not stronger than a single layer if you use good epoxy(an added expense when splicing)

¿ choices choices !

It would take me a long time to figure out how to move the 5 x 10 sheets
