I approached this from a modular view.
I happen to love radio. I can use almost any radio that has an earphone output and I wire that into a blue tooth speaker.

For emergency type situations AM/FM/Weather Alert/Short Wave is ideal for me. Even if local stations are knocked out (like in Puerto Rico) short wave lets you tune in around the globe to hear what’s going on in the blast zone. This one is not cheap. Its small and versatile. Affiliate link

I have a satellite radio that I can use in my car or with an adapter it goes in my shop. Before I had satellite radio I used a car radio in the shop hooked up to a pair of old computer speakers and a 12 volt converter. The radio I got on Craigslist for 10.00 with AM/FM/CD player and the speakers at the local thrift store for 3.00. For an antennae I used an old coaxial cable hanging on the wall. I mounted the radio and the speakers in an old jewelry box, another thrift store bargain. I dont think I had more than 20.00 in the whole setup. Here is a pic, not mine but it might give you and idea.

Thank You. Very Nice! What does the satellite subscription cost a year?
Is it one basic plan or are there add on's for additional programing?

My initial cost with Sirius was 10.00 per month with my car radio. I had the subscription for 4 months during one of my winter trips down south. I turned off the subscription after the trip, you can cancel anytime. They did a we want you back promotion and offered me a 12 month subscription for 60.00 payable up front. I took advantage of the offer. When that ended I canceled again. I purchased an AM/FM/Satellite radio on their website for 60.00. It can be used at home or in the car. The am/fm is available all the time and I buy the subscription when I will be traveling for 10.00 a month. I have traveled up and down the east coast and have never had a problem with reception except when going through a tunnel.

Sat radio opens a lot of options. Out west is where radio stations get few and far between. If you go with a regular radio and no sat. Make sure it has a USB terminal on it. Carry a USB memory stick preloaded with your music on it for the areas where you can't find a station you want to listen to. Also make sure the radio you choose has a seek button. Let it find the channels instead of scrolling threw everything yourself. Seek will find the best receive on channels.

WOW!!! I guess the next question is …. a radio that does it all ? … "Just a Radio” ,and satellite , memory stick , and something in a little larger format than the palm size radios … ??? ( something with a handle , maybe cigar box size… ish ? ) … and sounds decent .
Thanks for all the Help guys , and the enlightenment as to the options … Might be easier to find something now that we know what to look for …. Thanks Again …!!!

Look into the hand crank survival radios also. The one I have does not have USB. I did see an advert a while back for one that did have USB. I can't remember who made it or was selling it. Most of the survival radios have a small foot print. Most do not have sat radio on them. You would have to stay in car radios or sirus stand alone radio.

Thank you for allowing me to join.
If you are looking for just a radio to catch the National Weather Service advisories,
I just got this one.
It's really small, a bit bigger than two sets of playing cards, but it has a crank and also a small solar
panel for maintenance. It also has a flashlight built into it.
I crank it for a minute and it lasts about 5 minutes, and even though it has AM and FM, I bought
it specifically for the NWS in case I get caught out and clouds roll in. It was $20.

I also have a Grundig crank radio I bought a few years ago, and where it does NOT have the NWS service band specific on it, it is a basic
radio, it has AM/FM and also Shortwave 1 and 2. I crank it for 2 minutes and it lasts a good hour. It was $170 and is no longer made.
I'd swear I bought it for $40 - 20 years ago.

Be aware if you have a crank or solar radio you DO have to change the internal battery once every
few years, they will stop holding (much of) a charge. I think the Grundig last about 7 years.

Not for rescue? Like a Spot, Garmin, a PLB, or sat phone?
