Let's build a 5x8 or 10 .........

Postby Modstock » Sat Jun 22, 2019 2:56 pm

Let's build a 5x8 or 10 cargo conversion.
This is just an idea right now until other projects get out of the way.
I'd like to build a cargo conversion but in a different way.

Rear door has been something I've always wanted to do. So im playing with floor plans.
Definitely looking at a V-nose for more space.

A few requirements:;;

1.) Private space for the porta potty
With walls and curtain.
2.) Sink
(I have one, might as well use it).
3.) Small spot to cook inside.
(When weather hits)
4.) Maybe some sort of fold up tables at the edge of the bed.

My original plan was to put the bed in front with everything else near the rear.
Probably use the 2 barn doors. One not operable and enter through the other. I could see problems with that IDK.

I've also seen some cool side door entry's with a rear bed.
Decisions, decisions.

So let's toss some idea's around. What works vs. What dosent ???

Anything I should be looking out for when picking up a cargo ?

Basically the same floor plant set up as the Weiscraft Little Joe, which is a 5' x 9' fiberglass trailer. The Little Joe has storage in cabinets around the ceiling.

Overview here: weiscrafttrailers.com/littlejoe.html
Floorplan here: www.weiscrafttrailers.com/joespecs.html

The new Gobe (GobeCampers.com) uses the same (similar) shell as the Weiscraft trailer, with a heavier duty trailer and a bit slicker outfitting.

One thing that would be useful for either would be to have exterior access to the area under the bench seats, but the fiberglass shell doesn't seem to be able to accommodate that.

One thing I may look at is trailer brakes.
How does this change my 4-flat wiring , or can I run a separate wire ?

Trailer Brake Controller's are available that need not be wired into the vehicle brake system itself. (they are not $$$ - mine was $310 - but they are for sale out there) And even with a 4 prong trailer, I would make the vehicle a 7 prong'er as I did with mine years ago (just not using 3 of the prongs) They are "so" much easier to "plug into/disconnect from" when hooking up the trailer for travel. And now with also having a trailer brake system - it was just that much easier after already having the 7 prong one installed and only needing to hook up one more wire for this brake controller :applause: - I am using the Tekonsha Prodigy 'RF' controller that mounts on the trailer, it 'did not' have to be wired into the vehicles brake system like most do - only needed a direct power wire from the battery which was easy to run under the vehicle to the 7 prong'er I already had there. The controller for it inside the vehicle is a hand held 'radio transmitter' that is powered by the cigarette lighter plug in. So far it is working 'great'!!

If you have and use a 'smart' phone, 'Curt' Hitches(approx.$225) has one now that just plugs into the vehicle 7 prong with the trailer plugging into it - no wiring of the vehicle at all - it is about 6 inches long and that is the whole thing. Your phone ends up being the 'controller' via some app on it.......... (but yes, the vehicle will need to have the 7 prong system wired in - NOTE-a 7 prong 'plug in' is just a 4 prong setup with 3 'extra' wire prongs added. #1 Electric Brakes/#2 Auxiliary power/#3 Charging + the other 4 for lights. Yes, just something more to think about............................... take care

Cool, thanks for the info.

Here's a quick floor plan I came up with.
I hate when I see the potty next to the cooking area so this seems better.

The potty will only be used for emergency night situations but having privacy is top of the list.

Probably gonna go look at a few trailers soon to get an idea of what'll fit.

What we tell everyone is to use a roll of masking tape or chalk and mark off your garage floor with the interior size trailer you’re thinking of . Then pile ALL your camping gear in that area ( and yourself and anybody else you expect to camp with ) and see how it fits and what is the best actual “floorplan" . … and you’ll have to imagine walls and ceiling … but it will give you a good idea, full size, exactly how much space you really have … or need . Plan your exits …
 Just an idea …

I did just that.
Looks like 5x10 is a winner.
Other idea's are brewing about storage and such.

So I guess the next big decision would be windows.

1.) Id like to avoid cutting any main beams . Limited to skinny windows.
2.) I love my tilt out windows on my TD. Probably not an option.

Any other cargo convertor's on here with tips on windows selection ???

Light weight alternative ???

Postby WizardOfOdds » Thu Jul 04, 2019 5:04 pm

I have not read all this thread, in part because every time I see a picture of a cargo trailer I say to myself "that thing looks w-a-y too heavy for me". This my be way off-base, but have you looked at the Yuppie 5x10? Here is a link to my page where I just posted a link and picture.

Interesting. Probably over my budget though.
This is just a planning phase until I sell my TD.
The weight is a concern since I dont want to have to upgrade the tow rig after doing this.
Im probably going to test tow one soon to see what the rig will handle before any big decisions are made.

I saw these type of windows on here (somewhere) that looked interesting.
One reason I like em is I wouldn't have to cut any structural beams and weld/fab any reinforcements.

From reviews I've read, they seem to hold up great.

Anyone here with these windows ?

Here's a video with some.

What tow vehicle do you have? I tow my 6 by 10 cargo conversion with a small truck ( Ford Ranger 4.0 v6). No problem! Make sure you get a trailer with headroom. Different heights are available. I also carry a quad and lots of gear. Never weighed it but can do 75 anytime I need to (passing, etc.)

99 jeep Cherokee, 31" tires, 3.55 gears but I live in a mountainous area and steep climbs are common.
Usually loaded with firewood, extra fuel, water.
