Weak glue ?

Postby saywhatthat » Wed Jun 26, 2019 12:28 pm

I’m not a wood type person. Make too many mistakes. Been waiting for one molded fiberglass part for over 7 months. To finish 3 trailers. So need to make a tooling buck. .Trying to save on outlay of money
Will perform this by gluing oak door stop to primed 2 by 3. After tooling is completed .Would prefer to separate the two. Two sided tap will leave a large gap. Any thought on this. Thank you.

I think you are asking about taking two pieces of wood apart after you've used them for a mould or some such fiberglass project.

If that's the case, I would consider using double-sided carpet tape or screws.

Oui
The carpet tape will have a large gap. Would prefer not use screws. Extremely ornate pattern on the door stop . Concerned with coming from the back side spiting the oak. At $22.00 a running foot.

Pre drill the oak and it won’t split.

Furniture makers do a lot of temporary removable glue ups.
They take a fairly mild glue like good old yellow wood glue ( PVA like Titebond original) but they put a sheet of paper between the two pieces.
It holds well enough to clamp or saw or turn on a lathe. When it's time to separate, get a sharp chisel in the seam and give it a tap.
It pops apart and you clean up the glue residue.

The piece of paper is also a trick used in mold making for molten metal sand casting. It's used fairly often, even for wood turning on a lathe. Many times, the mold maker will put zip ties around the piece for additional safety on a lathe.
