Why a bathroom tent?

Postby Cosmo » Fri Jun 28, 2019 6:57 pm

I am sure there are good reasons.
Why use a bathroom/shower tent rather than having a walled shelter such as a Clam do double doodie which would require one less tent?

Thanks in advance

Unless the weather is miserable, you'll want to take the 4 clam sides down every day so you can enjoy the open view of the screened enclosure. With a shower/potty tent, you put it up and you're done until you're ready to move on. Of course, if you don't mind a possible arrest for indecent exposure...

Why. That's the question.

Let me sit down for a moment and think about it.

Bathroom tent can get pretty ripe quickly.

Sidewalls only go up on the popup shelter in the cold; with a propane heater it becomes a hot tent and primary living space, so either way not appropriate for toilet. It is also the kitchen, yo.

Now that were older, my wife is a lot more comfortable changing clothes and maybe a quick wash up... She always makes me stand guard. She had a dream she was starkkers and a gust of wind blue it away.

I didn't know what a Clam was and had to Google it. After watching a few videos I think it's clear what you want a potty tent. Ours is waterproof, and can handle some strong winds. We had it in winds up to 40 MPH. We are still looking for something for sun and rain protection but haven't found anything yet.

In all seriously, you want something like this. I chose this off the list just because they had the picture of how easy it is to uncoil and set up by itself. (Coiling it back down to pack is a different story but once you grock it, its really is simple)

We just got back from our first trip with the GardenLine clone of the "clam". I must say it really blocks the wind without sides and geodesic design plus the small mesh of the screen means little air flow thru it. So far that is our only complaint. It would not make a good potty tent IMHO.

I went camping as the only adult with three kids once and it was very difficult in the state park bathrooms to manage a three year Old and a crawling toddler while I myself needed to brush my teeth and use the facilities. Plus when the eight year old boy needed to go, we all had to leave camp together and accompany him to the latrine which was a ways a way and he was too scared to walk alone. So the next time I bought a little standup tent and put a kids porta potty in it. It was a blessing.

- When I started camping again, using my TTT, I wisely bought a canopy (don't leave home without it), and also a four-walled, floored side-tent that attaches directly to it. I've used it only a few times since, because it takes awhile to set-up, and it's been put up wet/dirty, too. Otherwise, it's perfect. But, as I'm camping solo, I find that my simple pop-up teepee-style (floorless) is much easier to use, and can be simply wiped down and folded up in minutes. And, I can tuck it under my canopy, and/or move it around if needed in seconds. The only drawback to using it has been that mosquitoes love to congregate in it, since I never remember to zip it closed! Anyway, I carry both tents with me, and maybe I'll use the side-tent again on a future trip.
