Hope it wasn't something I said- is Nodrog leaving?

Postby rjgimp » Sun Jan 12, 2020 10:06 pm

Saturday evening Nodrog opened a new topic in which he shared a link to an opinion piece in The Guardian about the leadership in the National Parks system over the last couple years. His premise was that he wasn't intending to be political, but... 'hey y'all, look at this!' I responded late Saturday night that the piece he linked to was extremely political and very partisan and if he really wanted to discuss the National Parks and their management that he should maybe choose a more balanced article as a jumping off point. Today I see that he has not only sanitized the title of that topic and removed his opening post, but also has gone back and removed most of the content of his build thread as well as a large number of his responses to others over the last couple years.

Nodrog, it appears my choice of words has made you want to leave and I am deeply sorry about that. That was certainly not my intent. From what I have seen you have been a valuable contributor to this forum and I hope that continues and the deleted posts can be restored. To be clear regarding yesterday's thread, your post specifically was not political but the Guardian piece you linked to was extraordinarily so. Obviously I ought not attempt to speak for everyone here but the sense I have gotten in this forum is that as a whole we all get plenty of politics everywhere else and this has appeared to be a welcome respite from it.

Here is what's left of Nodrog' post from Saturday. I have left my response intact. I will lay my carcass upon the Town Square and await any drubbing the membership chooses to give me. Here I stand, I can do no other...

It should be left to the mods to censor based on "too political".

Fact is, there is no point in mythical "objectivity" when the public interest is destroyed by the regulators whose mission is supposed to be protecting it.

Business interests are successfully destroying anything that stands in their way, and you're either part of the solution or part of the problem.

I'll second that notion!

Anyway, any opinions posted here (or elsewhere) are bound to draw dissent and discussion, and the original poster must then make a decision on how to react. How they react is their responsibility alone. I'm sorry Nodrog appears to have left, but I'll respect that decision and also will not point fingers at anyone else.

Speaking for myself, when I post my current theories on how best to fiberglass my teardrop (for example), and others disagree, I don't take it personally, but consider it as the constructive advice it is intended. (Indeed, that's the very reason I post on the topic.) Any views that I hold so strongly that I'm liable to take personal offense at any dissent, or discussion, (usually somewhere well beyond tnttt construction!) I leave out of this forum.

With proposing the idea of a trailer made of foam , we made many quick enemies ,with many “ non-constructive “ statements, and tried not to react to their “opinions” … but present a reasonable solution , many did not even want to listen to . So we did the “internet Thing” , we ignored them ... I only got into trouble once defending my “crazy" ideas , and that was more a “warning” …and from an An Australian who I don’t believe knew the vagaries of our distortion of the English language …
On social media , everyone has an opinion … best learn to ignore the ones you don’t agree with , too many these days show up just for the argument … let's not encourage them … ;)

Bringing awareness to an issue is one thing.
Blatant partisan politics is another.

If someone can't handle an internet forum that doesn't want the partisan BS, they can choose to leave.

---

Politics have no place in civil conversation with strangers.

I am a long-time member of a hunting and firearms related forum. About ten years ago, things got so nasty in the "Politics and Legal Discussion" sub-forum, mainly due to Obama-bashing and people suggesting or condoning illegal acts, that the owner of the website shut the whole thing down for three weeks. When the forums came back, that sub-forum was locked, somewhat sanitized, and 'preserved for posterity'; with a new forum in its place, aimed at civil discussion of issues involving law, legal issues, and civil rights directly relating to the focus of the forums. In addition, a pledge was made that the new sub-forum would be heavily moderated and constantly monitored.

And it is.
Bring in politics, and you're gone! Rant about elected officials from any party, and you're gone! Deviate from firearms or hunting topics, and you're at least getting a warning (and the thread locked, or your post deleted). Blatant disregard for the rules may result in a permanent ban.
With some subjects, it can be difficult to see the fine line dividing the discussion of a proposed law and the politics of the matter. Some people have a hard time with that. But most don't. Read the rules. Follow the rules. And it works out just fine.
I like it there.

I've been participating on internet forums for 20 years. Politics are never good, unless you contain all political discussion to one sub-forum (or specific set of sub-forums) and allow it to be a free-for-all. (With the exceptions of a few things like pornography, hate speech, and attacks on other members.)
For forums where politics come up frequently, I find it to be an all-or-nothing affair: Allow politics, with strict enforcement of containment rules, or ban it outright.
With dedicated political forums, people can avoid the stupidity, or choose to participate. It is each member's choice.
Reading through a build journal and suddenly happening across a rant about Donald Trump, or Nancy Pelosi, or the 'kind of stupid people that join our armed forces' doesn't happen with strict containment. ...Because when someone does post something like that, it gets deleted and the member may get a permanent vacation from the forums.

Yes, I recall that exchange. When I stumbled upon it I was completely dumbstruck. I kept going back there for several days, thinking I had either completely missed or horribly misread something. As it had happened long before I became involved here there was clearly no point in my commenting upon it in any way.

Odd thing about the USA, Australia, and Great Britain... three countries separated by a common language. :?

Hey Rob don’t loose any sleep over it. If he had an argument to your reply he could have mad it but decided to leave.

I don’t come to TNTTT for politics, I probably wouldn’t have even clicked on the thread. Same with camping we now have a strict No Politics policy after a three night trip. It was the second night and a guy that has only worked for Fortune 50 companies started talking about free health care, free school ( including PhD), then how $15 minimum wage is not enough that it should be $18-20. One of the guys there is part owner in a few companies and employ over 150 people. He gave fact after fact why it won’t work. But this guys kept arguing with “I feel this or I feel that” would not listen to the facts. After 45 minutes it started to get heated. I told my wife to grab her chair and we left the campfire and went and sat at out Teardrop by ourselves, I put on some jazz to help drown out the talk because we were only about 30’ from the fire. In a few minutes a few other couples came over. I was ready to leave but I was blocked in. We talked for 30 minutes or so and then turn in. A few people stayed by the fire but the talked calmed down. The next morning the guy who started it got everyone together and apologized and said he would leave. Someone else said no one is leaving and from now on no more political talk. I haven’t be out with this group again but I heard most adopted that for all of their trips. I’ll see most of them this weekend again. One guy said a new rules this weekend “no. Jazz”.

I'm sleeping like a baby, thanks! :relaxing: :goodnight:

The original title was something like 'what do you think of this' so I presumed it was some new cutting edge construction technique. :hammerhead:

At our family reunion we adopted the "No political talk" and "no Facebook talk" cause we all know how political that is.
Sometimes we have to remind my grandma.

Best thing I've red on this thread.

"Politics have no place in civil conversation with strangers."

I was going to post about the article but thought I would wait a short while before I commented. This remains a great forum. Sometimes one must bite their tongue.
