Hurricane Hinge gasket question

There is a 1/4" gap (by design) between the two sections of the hinge when the hatch is closed.
Should I be running a gasket thru this gap?

I did. Only a short section on the two ends to seal the outer edges of the hatch.

Before sealing the ends and installing edge trim.

If you cut the vertical pieces off to clear the walls, you should end up with something similar to this:
