I was watching grizzly feed in a river. There were 3 or 4 all trying to catch fish with differing levels of success. All of a sudden, as if on cue, all of them stood up, sniffed the air, dropped and ran off into the woods.
30 seconds later a very large male ambles into the water, takes a single swipe, catches a fish and then takes it into the bushes. Clearly the Bull of the Woods.
All of a sudden one guy goes running down the trail with his camera yelling, "I'm gonna get pictures". I was standing next to the ranger who swore under his breath and then said," when they come piling out of that brush I won't know who to shoot". Luckily he caught the guy first.
If other Griz are afraid of an individual bear I would think common sense would tell you not to approach. The gene pool was not made cleaner that day but only because of the Rangers intervention.
