Well people mostly bury the waste alright, but our rivers, creeks and waterholes are small and very low flowing.
Combine that with a bunch of very small scavenger type marsupials digging up whatever they can find, and there is just too much risk of contaminating waterholes and things. And it will almost certainly be the only waterholes for miles and miles.
So I just avoid the digging hole thing.
