Transparent Wood

Postby JuneBug » Thu Feb 11, 2021 4:32 pm

Came across this article on the DIY Teardrops group on facebook:
Scientists develop transparent wood that is stronger and lighter than glass
Could be a fun backyard experiment (requires direct sunlight) if you aren't in the current polar vortex deep freeze.

I was so excited by this idea that I decided to try it myself. But while taking the wood and chemicals to the back yard, tripped and fell over some invisible firewood I forgot I'd stacked there!

Having "bleached" veneer like that for wood turning projects, a word of warning: The peroxide used for that is much more concentrated than what you get at the drug store and must be handled with care. The same precautions you would use for battery acid.

No doubt that the transparent wood will be in the same aisle as transparent aluminum at Home Depot...

(I remember the day some Scottish guy came into the lab gave us the formula. Said something about needing it for "whales"...?)

Cost of transparent wood vs. plain old garden variety wood at Home Delay?

Ok; to get serious, now. The article says 1mm thickness. That's hardly the equal thickness of actual glass, and it appears not as transparent as glass, so increasing the thickness is going to decrease the transparency. While the technology is great, I suspect it's going to get labeled as "green" tech, and have a "value-added" price as well. That alone will reduce the demand, as most, if not all, of society is looking for a good price point, and traditional glass, or even polymers are going to beat the pricing.

I'm all for advanced tech, but I see this struggling to make it big........sorry.
