-10F in Denver on Thursday

Postby bdosborn » Sat Dec 17, 2022 8:22 pm

Brrrrrr..... I'll be bringing my LiFePo4 batteries into the garage on Wednesday. Most are only rated down to -20C, here's the specs for my CALB cells (-10F= -23C):

Ouch, but I'm with you.

We're looking at -9ºF that night. And it's the night of our annual solstice bonfire party. Brrr... bad weather for naked pagan dancing!

It was global cooling that was going to kill us when I was a kid. :?

Well... I recall -49º here one night. So I've kinda-sorta tried it. Fortunately, that finger freezer was forty-five years ago and I've seldom had to drive square tires here.

Turn the furnace on.

Slightly less tongue in cheek, but the above was meant as a possible option:
I attempted to winterize my brother's massive trailer while he was on a job in New Mexico for a month. He stopped me part way through. "That trailer is just too complicated, with too many sagging lines, and I don't have the right air compressor there for you to use. Just open the drains, turn on the furnace, dump some antifreeze into the pea traps, and check the propane every few days, if you can."
By the time he got home, we had been in single digits for a week and really haven't gotten above freezing since then.

He wrapped the underbody in some blankets, turned the furnace on, and is now replacing propane tanks every few days. Until probably April. :R

(Because enough of the system is already frozen to prevent full winterization, and he is afraid that he won't be able to clear everything out, no matter how much heat and compressed air he throws at it.)

I'll admit, as far as I remember, never experiencing anything below about -20. But then, underneath the long underwear, wool trousers, "snow pants", flannel shirt, sweater, heavy winter coat, knitted hat, rabbit lined gloves, wool socks, and insulated Air Force boots, I was stark nekked!

I might; the cold weather is only supposed to last a day or so.

It actually got close to that some Winters in Upstate NY where I grew up. (I remember camping in Boy Scouts in negative single digits at least one time.) But the Binghamton record shows only -15 in 1979. But we were out away from the city, and I believe it got down to -20 on our thermometer for days at a time on several January's.

At one point in the Air Force, I had a job where I had to travel a lot to various SAC bases in the Mid-west, though I missed the worst of the cold, which I understand can get down somewhere past where Celsius is greater than Fahrenheit (-40) (Why not Minot!?)

Funniest winter weather I encountered wasn't extreme cold though. I had some meetings late in the week at Omaha in early February, and spent the weekend at a friend's, where I joined his squadron at a barbecue in short sleeves. Wonderful low 70's. Then a front came through Sunday night, and I struggled to the airport early morning when it was 4.

And now this:

And here's the details: Patchy blowing snow between 11pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -31. Blustery, with a northwest wind 17 to 22 mph, decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.

OH-BOY!!!
