You could go to 7 1/2" without a worry - because they're longer and higher, these swoopy fenders can be wider without looking silly.

The notches I expected were just to go around the bracket that holds the springs and joins the two halves. On photos I've seen, this sticks out beyond the rest of the frame, so if the fender isn't cut, it won't lie flush against the body side.
