Pure Sine Wave Inverters

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby PaulC » Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:57 am

Chris, just a thought, you keep referring to "pure sinwave" and I am wondering if the company who is supplying this machine is a little off beam with their words. Being quite honest here, I have never heard of a pure sine wave inverter.
Cheers
Paul
PS sorry about the radio shack thing, I thought they would be better than that. A Mate of mine owns one over here and I guess that's where the difference lays.

Paul, a pure sine wave invertor puts out a sine wave that is all nice and curvy...like it is supposed to be...some of the cheaper models put out a modified sine wave, which is clipped flat on top and is not liked very much by a lotta hi-tech electronics. The modified type also is not as efficient as a pure wave for running motors and other general use...

About RS, they are as good as the manager running the individual store...I use one locally alot...another, a few of miles away, I wouldn't go looking for a AA battery in

MJ, Over here they talk about modified sine and True sine wave. Maybe that's where I'm becoming :?
Thanks

Just to clear it up

Postby Guy » Mon Mar 20, 2006 9:33 am

Dear Paul, Chris, and Madjack,

You are all right. And here is why.

For many years there was only one company making True Sine Wave inverters and they held the trademark for this name. They half-heartedly enforced their trademark rarely preventing other companies from using it, unless those companies were trying to pass off, square, quasi, or modified sine wave models as True Sine Wave.

Now, Xantrex has bought up all the trademarks over the last couple of years and is agressively preventing other companies from using it. So those companies and distributors had to come up with a new term, Pure Sine Wave.

Paul, even Outbackinverters.com has started to use it since their inverters are made by Solatron, which is not a Xantrex company

Thanks, Raul, the second link was for a Pure/True sine wave invertor. They had one for 300 watts which will work just fine. Anyone heard anything about Aims brand invertors?

Just a note about the CPAP machines and true or pure sine wave.

Most will work on modified sine wave inverters. True or Pure sine will be better for the equiopment and is required if your CPAP has an oxygen concentrator.

We have several Sine Wave Power inverters in our store http://www.outsidesupply.com .

Another good site is DanRowe.com, I learned a BUNCH about inverters there, and he has a good collection of Pure Sine Inverters. http://tinyurl.com/8tdg4

Hope this helps

What exactly are you up to?

Postby eamarquardt » Thu Dec 13, 2007 12:36 pm

Hi,

Jumping in here a the end I'm not sure exactly what your need is. It sounds like your girlfriend has a breathing machine she uses when she sleeps that draws about 200 watts at 120 volts and needs a nice sine wave to work correctly (I absolutely agree that all inverters are not created equal).

Depending on the efficiency of the inverter I'd guess will take about 20 dc amps at 12 volts to create 200 watts at 120 volts ac. Guessing that your girlfriend will like to sleep for about 8 hours that will be about 160 amp hours. Having some experince managing 12 volt useage on a sailboat with no access to ac suggests that 160 amp hours is a lot. Under the best of circumstances it would take a 60 amp alternator about 3 hours to pump that must oomph into a bank of batteries (don't quote me on this, but it's a place to start your thinking).

So, what's my point. You need to think about the whole system before buying anything. Several batteries will be required, a big charger, and a good inverter.

Not to be a "Gloomy Gus" but I sometimes find myself admiring my beautiful paint job from the corner I've just painted myself into.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

Xantrex makes a 400W true sine wave inverter that's meant for RV electronic equipment. Its probably the cheapest one you'll find as they are pricey.

I've seen them on eBay too...

Have you tried these guys?

Postby dreadcptflint » Fri Dec 14, 2007 1:39 pm

I would try talking to these guys: http://www.cpaptalk.com/ . They have the most information that I have seen when it comes to CPAPs. I have one and when I am ready to deal with the power issue then I will go to them.

I have used this one for for some of my discharge type lighting. (HMI) I also have "vaporized" a modified sine wave (MSW) inverter. They seem like a good unit. I called Xantrex when I burnt up the MSW inverter and they said "oh, you can't power a HMI on a MSW inverter". Then they sent me a replacement. Good people.
