The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

Thanks, Chip. I wish I had know about these earlier. I'll use them for my fender mounting too. They should draw flush into the 3/4" spruce framing. I'll test one on a piece to see if I can use them without countersinking, and it sounds like I can.

Chip, I looked in the specialty drawers at both Lowes and HD and found no elevator bolts. But, I did find some cabinet hardware, 1/4"x20 connector bolts with round, flat heads driven in with a hex wrench. They also have 1/4"x20 threaded inserts with a head wider than the outside threads so that they can't be pulled through the wood. I can put these on the inside, in the framing, and insert the bolts through the fender face into the inserts. A 1 1/2" bolt will go through the two pieces of 3/4" wood and 1/4" skin, into the threaded insert, which is about 3/4" long, giving me about 1/2" of gripping threads for the bolt. With some locktite, they should stay put.
