Cabela's Outback Oven on Sale

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby Chris C » Wed Apr 05, 2006 9:32 am

In all fairness, I've seen it..........seen it in use..........and think it's a pretty slick oven and stovetop for camping. But why not ask some people who've laid out the money for one. They'd be a better gage of usefulness than I. Up until Coleman came out with their new one, there's not been much opportunity to have an oven out of doors. (except D.O.'s, of course)

By the way, Steve, not to hijack the thread, but I sure like the look of your galley..........heck, your whole trailer for that matter!

Now, back to the thread...................PM Kai, or Steve if you have any questions about how well they work or hold up. Heck, a lot of people on the forum have them.

I was sold on the Outback until I started thinking about it:

It just seems a little inconvenient when you want to use both functions at once. Like, if my wife is stirring something on the stove, how do I get in there to play with the oven? How does using both at the same time affect cooking temperature? And when you're using the stove, can't that make a mess on the whole unit in general?

I'm going with a cheap oven as a separate unit:

The one Gage posted looks really cool too, but I think this one is bigger.

Or I'm going with a combo convection/microwave, and eliminating a separate oven altogether.

I'll never make up my mind.

Yeah--Northern Tool had it in their catalog for $69. I just used that link to show it. I didn't know Wal-Mart had it, though. Now I gotta look.

As a Wal-Mart employee, my wife is allowed to be victim of every labor law infraction on the books--for 10% off of stuff.

This country is doomed.

I was looking at this stove on the Cabellas site last week then it disappeared from the page. They still had a bunch at our local store for $199. Does anyone have one of these in their tear? Recommended or not?

Thobbs,

I like it, and would even spend the $199 for it again. The oven is well insulated, you can put your hand on the outside when the inside is 400 degrees. It heats up well and it's easy to maintain a temprature in the oven. The burners on the top are larger diameter than a coleman camp stove, hasn't been a problem so far using several different sizes of pots/pans. It is easy to keep clean on top, and the burners come apart and can be cleaned easily, just lift the top off, not like the coleman burners that will plug up if someone boils something over on the stove. If anything happens to change my mind, I'll let you know. I'll be using it again this weekend.

Steve

6:30 this morning, I made the leap at Wal-Mart:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... id=3767274

I grabbed one and stuck it on layaway with $20. (My wife is ready to kill me.)

So decision made--combo microwave/convection oven, no propane oven. Saves me some space, and I finally have the dimensions of at least one appliance to plan the galley.
