hurricane frances

Postby catrinka » Sun Sep 05, 2004 1:42 pm

I'm sitting here and watching the coverage on tv of hurricane frances. I can't imagine going through something like that. Inspite of the cold temps we get up here in the winter we know that eventually spring will come and we will all survive with no damage. My heart goes out to anyone that is in Florida.

That'd be a wild storm in a td. :) I posted a while back whats teh wildest weather you have ever had in a TD and I think a hurricane would top any. :)

I can't imagine that a teardrop would still be sitting on it's wheels. ??? I think it would by laying on it's side!!!

I caught a quick glimpse on TV of a police vehicle used during the storm. It was a cross between a tank and a stealth fighter jet, with sharply angle sides. I can't find a photo of that on the web, yet, but I think that's how you'd have to build a hurricane teardrop!!!

Any storm chasers here?

Weather in Tampa

Postby Jabber » Mon Sep 06, 2004 12:02 pm

I live in Tampa and it has been raining for well over 24 hours. The wind picked up pretty good here though. I had posted before that I was going to start my Weekender this holiday but I had to use all my Ply to block up my windows. Last night the wind picked up my HF trailer and moved it across my yard. Mother Nature thought the trailer looked better leaning on my Shed instead of where I had it. Besides that I have a lot of cleanup. I hope some of the members from the east coast fared well

Have not heard from Buford yet. No doubt he's still without power, and has to do cleanup besides.

I am planning on moving south when I retire, but this hurricane thing might have me rethinking that...

Did anyone ever find a photo of the hurricane vehicle that the FL police use during storms?

Yes, that might be it. The one I saw was white, not black, but other than that, I think you got it!

So that would be the shape for a tiny hurricane trailer, right?

Whew I made it back to Austin! Was supposed to leave Palm Bay (I can actually say Palm Bay and people will know where it is) on Sat but we got stuck there. Managed to get my flight today (Tues) and get home.

We started getting the high winds Sat AM and it kept going till Mon PM. My parents had power on Sat but lost it Sun AM. Had land lines but lost them Mon. Lost water since there is now power for the well pump. Cell phones kept saying "Searching for Network". We had plenty of water and the artesian well but that is pretty stinky water (used it to flush toilets). Luckily, my Dad's office has power so they are hanging out there.

My parents house came out fine, they lost a few trees and some soffit vents but otherwise it was fine. My mom's greenhouse was a wreck but it looks rebuildable. Maybe I'll post some pics when I get everything sorted out. I've been in a few Hurricanes but this one was agonizing because it took so long.

I was out to sea once in a Hurricane, we were trying to get out of its way but it didn’t work. We took water over the stack on a destroy escort.
Another words we were under water! Saw the USS Enterprise took water over the bow all the way to the tower. Must have been about 5000 sick puppies on that ship. She is so big one normally doesn’t have a sense of movement. The bow on her is 50 feet out of the water.
Waves where 60+ feet high in a category 3 hurricane at sea. Never want to do that again. Just think in Key West, the highest point in town is 5 feet above sea level. And 90 miles from any ware, one could say 90 miles out to sea.

I agree.
Ok,

Now that things have quieted down here today. I'll try and fill you in on a few things.

First off. My dad gave me an old generator a couple of months ago. She leaks oil. She uses oil. She uses gas. But she was a life saver this time.

Power went out here Sat at 4:00pm We listen to the radio for a while. We even thought about going down to the place where the lady on CNN was and then thought na. We better stay here.

All went well. I fell asleep around 12:00 and Cheryl came to bed around 1:00 after the eye hit below use.

Got up the next morning and got the generator out and placed it on the front porch. Got the little 5.00 coffee pot we got a couple of years ago at Wal-mart when my parents were here at Thanksgiving.

Got the generator running and had 2 cups of coffee. Was great. Later on that day. I hooked the generator to the well pump and we were able to flush the toilets. All looking good.

I've learned that this one isn't quite big enough for us in this type of situation so we will be getting a bigger one for both use up on the property and here when we have an emergency like we just had.

I will keep this one for a spare but it won't last very much longer without replacing the motor. It sure did save us.

Had coffee On Monday and Tuesday. and ran the pump Monday so we could take a shower. All worked great.

House did fine. I did learn a lot about all this. Next time I'll use a 5500 watt generator and hook it to the dry breaker. Shut off the power to the house and backfeed form the generator to the house.

Will be able to run the Frig, fans, some lights, TV. and a small 5000btu A/C that I'm going to install in the wall of our bedroom. This sleeping with no A/C in Fl. don't cut it.

That about gets up to date.

Hey Buford,

Ya made it back... good to see you again, after all those high winds and rain... I can't believe you actually wanted to stand on the beach with those chuckleheads when the eyewall rolled on shore...

Also good to hear you learned a thing or two about generators... You'll have to contribute to my generator page! LOL

A friend had a generator but he said it wouldn't run his well pump. I guess he learend the same lesson. His main reason for buying the generator was to keep his reef tank and frige running.

Out of boredom, I was poking around my dad's garage. I found a Tiny Tiger generator. It would have run a TV just fine but my dad said that the carb is messed up. AARRRRGGG!
