I was wondering about propane fire pits. I found the ban and restrictions on the BC Wildfire Service website for the Kamloops Fire Centre. Westbank is in the K5 Penticton zone. On the Ban & Restrictions web page it states:
Campfire Bans in Kamloops Fire Centre• Definition of Campfires
All open fires--including campfires--are prohibited throughout the entire Kamloops Fire Centre. This prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
Fireworks, burning barrels, tiki torches and sky lanterns are also prohibited.
This step is being taken to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
These prohibitions do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. The use of a campfire apparatus that does not meet these specifications is prohibited.

http://bcwildfire.ca/hprscripts/wildfirenews/DisplayBan.asp?ID=419#CampfireBansIt looks to me that propane fire pits (portable campfire apparatus) with a CSA or UL rating are allowed as well as cooking with gas stoves and briquettes. I've heard that during a fire ban in Washington state briquettes are not allowed so this is kind of surprising to me. Per the restriction, the flame height of 15 cm is 5.9 inches for us here in the US. I like to keep my flame low so I don't see a problem with that.
Of course, the final determination is up to our gracious host Brian as to whether we can use any of these devices.
