Old fashioned ice box designs?

Anybody have some interesting ideas for how to integrate an ice box into their galley?

The hinged door at bottom left is the original 1948 ice box in my galley. It accepts a 20 lb block of ice in the upper compartment and a case of beer in the bottom. The ice shelf has a drain tube that runs through the lower compartment and out the bottom of the trailer.



I believe the original galley probably had a removable water tank on the other side of the stove shelf, it seems that many tears of this vintage had them.

Are you trying to replicate an old ice box, or just get inspiration for an old-timey galley layout. If the former, I can take some pix of the interior of the icebox. I use it only for beverages, it's not insulated well enough to be safe for food anymore.

Other than that, ice on the top (cold air falls), on a drip tray with a drain. I would think you would want a drip tube running out the bottom of the floor.

Thanks. I searched "ice box" but got a lot of returns on coolers, not real ice boxes. I'll look in "general" also.

I was thinking about building one basically in the layout that guitar's teardrop has. It seems like with the blue foam you could make one good for the long weekend trips I usually do. I was assuming I'd put a line out the bottom, and the vertical orientation with selves would be more convenient than a cooler. But still, folks might have tips about dimensions, foam thickness, clever layouts, etc.

I think that my uncle had one at his fish camp. You can't beat the cooling time of a 20 lb block of ice, but they are hard to find around here.

We were thinking of buying a craigslist garage freezer anyway, so I'm of a mind that I might be clever enough to my my own large ice cube, and make it real cold. Yes, I think something like the one you posted but built to angle back under the hatch like the guitar teardrop above.

Block ice keeps longer but the smaller ice creates a colder ice box. Ideally a mixture of both would be a good compromise. The water generated is almost as cold as the ice that created it so I usually leave it until it starts to encroach on my food items.
