Geron, I used the plastic living hinge. Screwed it down every 2", and then covered it with wood. I also recessed it into the roof 1/8" so it would be flat with the roof , and put Dap caulking under neath it.

Turned out good, but redid the wooden pieces Ala Maryk.. lokks real good, just don't have updated pictures..

I'm going with the plastic as well

The Hurricane Hinge is a really neat product, but I hate spending more than something should cost just because it's 'exclusive' - If you could buy them at Lowes, they would be half the cost . . . . and then there's the shipping charges on something 6 feet long

100,000 flexes will just have to do - I also like the idea of a 50' roll . . . . I'll use the rest of it in lots of places

So...it's now two years into this thread. Seems that alot of people must have experimented and should be able to report back.

I'm on the verge of having to order my hinges, and would love to save $100 using plastic!

Reports? Any failures? Lots of successes?

I made the first post on '07. Mines still going strong on hatch and doors. Never a drop so far.

And, yeah, I've been around there that long and longer!

...starting my 3rd yr with it and no problems to report...I bought the 50' roll directly from Monroe Engineering and have used it for all my hinging needs...hatch, doors, interior cabinets and a few other places as well...interesting product to work with...installed/used properly it is hard to beat......................

Yup...Mine's still good too. No leaks, and no rips or tears in the hinge......

We have been using it on all our Tadpoles for three years now with no complaints. Our own trailer being on the winter/ spring shows all these years gets the tailgate opened three four hundred times a day and it still working great...... On thing to consider up here in the northern climes is if you open a hurricane hinge when there is ice or snow in the fold it WILL bust and replacement at 40 below can be painful...

This ones still looking a working like it did a couple of years ago too

I'm going into year 4....

Re-did the way it was mounted. Added a EPDM strip & put the hinge under the roof & over the hatch.

Hinge is STILL good!

How many leave there trailers out all year and what kind of climates.

...mine has been parked in my open yard...no cover...deeeeeeep South climate...lotssa heat/humidity/sunshine...not much real cold...working on 3 yrs...

Mine stays outside. Gets some snow/ice here in the mountains.

Mine stays outside year round uncovered & it gets used year round

A question for SlyTerry

You said a hurricane hinge will fail in cold weather...did you mean a plastic hinge, or an actual hurrican hinge?

Has anyone used the plastic hinges at, say, 10F? I can't imagine going out when colder than that.

The aluminum hurricane hinge will fail if something hard like ice or tree seeds gets into the joint and the tailgate is opened. The plastic hinge is used on snowmobiles and ice fishing huts where 10F is considered bathing suit weather Have opened our tailgate at -20F and nothing happened but I didn't push my luck and I did say a small prayer before commencing the lift
