Melvin, I did consider that, but when they are in the up position they rest in the pocket where the spars are, so they needed to be at the same point in regard to the front to back position. Otherwise one would be crooked.

I just placed an order for a circuit tester ($2.99) and a trailer jack (#8007019) for $39.99; it's got the pneumatic tire and is rated for 500 lbs....

I think I am going to do the same, but I will put hinge on Top so it drops down automatically when tops is opened or maybe hold with velcro.
Then I will cut a dovetail on end of support board which will fit in Pin on base
It will be Cheap, Quick, and Fast.

Here's what I did with drop down wood supports on hinges attached to the hatch edge frame. Note that my hatch is light enough to lift by (one) hand.



When folded up they're held in place on the inside of the hatch with simple cabinet door clips

A magnet on the hatch to hold support would require one hand
With a dovetail on bottom you could also install with one hand.

I think support stowed on hatch will keep it out of the way of supplies on counter

Going to cover inside of hatch with bead board and leave hardwood ribs exposed. There really is no need for sandwich design if there is enough ribs. Hiding wires is only real issue and I think I can rout a groove in the ribs to conceal.
