Its hard to see what people are using in the photos. I've seen some using house door latches and handles - but how do you seal the outside from water intrusion?
I've seen some using garage door handles but how to open/unlock from the inside?
What other types of latches/handles have you used?

Rick...take a look at the handles that Grant has on his site or RW Johnson, or any of the other teardrop sites that sell parts...all install with only a drill...but there are right and lefts...you get a handle and a latch set...the latch set has a lock on it and a handle for the interior...probably your best bet as they are keyed alike and intended for this use...Doug

I used the handles from Austin Hardware. You can get them keyed alike.
Here are some photos:

Latch catch plate: I made this out of 2 inch wide aluminum.
You just need a drill to install.

Rick, what I used was cost effective and work very well. I used matching screen door handles. They are lockable and has 3 holes to bore and add a little silicon behind the plates and there you go!! Here is an inside view. There is a knob on the outside.

I used these. The hatch mechanism is called a slamming rod lock.

Earl, I made some striker's for the doors. They look just like endo's, same inside latch also.

I used these to hold my rear hatch down, along with a wrapping, locking hasp. Very effective. The tension from the hold downs keep the hatch tight. I used them upside down though.

I used a common brass deadbolt lock as used in a house door.
Couple that with a handle inside and out and nothing more is needed.
Used 2 1/8" hole drill and a 3/4 paddle drill for the wall side.
These locks run about $5 at the depot.
Being a blacksmth, I made my own handles, but similar ones are very inexpensive.
I'm doing the same thing on my new build..

How thick is your wall/door? This is an interesting idea.

I used a regular lockset from Home Depot. The minimum door thickness needs to be 1 1/4".
Since I used 1/2" baltic birch for the doors, I just glued on a 1x4, which happens to be 3/4" thick, for a total of 1 1/4. But be aware, when you drill your 1" hole into the end of the door for the lockset, you'd better drill it perpendicular to the face, or it'll breakout.
We bought 3 locksets, all keyed alike... they were about $30 each.

Has anyone seen the door handles that you rotate to close. It's a real simple mechanism - no latches, strike plates, etc. The inside door handle spins with the outside handle - though they are usually offset about 90 degrees. When you turn the outside, it pulls the inside radially across the inside wall until it nests, drawing the door in as it turns. Does this make sense?
