Thanks Rob,

I wanted hidden hinges, but couldn't make them work, then I went with butt hinges and I don't like them either, but with your information, the piano hinge makes sense.

I'll do it that way, even though I seem to have been trying to avoid that solution!!

While we're talking about hinges, Doug, and anybody else with a woody Tear.... My doors are 1 1/4 inch thick and I plan to put 3/4" wood on top as per Slumbercoach design, ... How wide/thick of a hinge do I get? I found some nice Stainless butt hinges, but they are for regular doors and not deep enough if I want the doors to open fully. How did you guys do it? Will I have to buy a 2" wide hinge?

John, I have butt hinges on the side door and doubt I'll change them.

My doors are 1 1/8 thick and have no outside trim. I think I used 3 inch brass hinges.

Doug, sorry for not getting back sooner, been busy getting ready for a trip to Kenlake KY this week.

Your doors are completely different from ours so you would see the innertube where on ours the tube can't be seen. We wrapped the hinges with the innertube and screwed the hinge to the door frame. I don't have any pictures of it, I wish I had thought to take some though. Our doors are overlay doors instead of inset doors.

I got my piano hinge on this past weekend. I used butyl tape under the hinges and am planning to install a rubber 'gasket' over the top of the hinge too. Is a bike tire tube the best option for this?

Thanks,
Todd

p.s. I plan to split the tube, mount two strips of aluminum to 'hold' it down. However, one question is should I put a strip of 'wood' under the strips of aluminum to allow the screws to hold onto something? If so, I guess I'll use butyl tape again to cover the aluminum strips so that I don't get any leakage through the screw holes.

There is probably something as good or better out there than a bike tube but the tube has held up nicely. You will want to shield the tube from exposure to the sun as that will deteriorate a lot quicker if not shielded.

A strip of EDPM roofing would work nicely. The roofing EDPM would have some cloth layers embedded in it so it would be a bit more durable. The kicker if finding just a strip...

I plan on using a piece of retired fire hose. Will see how it works!

I trimmed the excess material at the hinge point of the hatch. I used some 5" wide ice dam tape over the 2 edge of the 2 sections as my 1st water barrier. I then applied 1/16 " black neopreme rubber cut to six inches wide. I bloused it loosely over the seam and installed 2 sections of 1" by 1/8" aluminum flat stock. This flat
stock had been drilled to simply screw thru and secure the rubber membrane.

Same basic idea on Chubby..........Image

This was a waterproof Rubbermaid shelf liner.

That's pretty much what the T@b has for a seal.

Is this for the galley? Why not use a hurricane hinge? They work very well, and a bread of silicone is all you need, the hinge itself is already pretty much waterproof....

I'm cheap, that's the only reason for me!

Hurricane hinges are not infallible - having lost a hatch due to a sprung hurricane hinge I'd consider a covered piano hinge like this if I were doing it again

In my TPCE build I want to have a nice large 3/4 inch radius between wall and roof, and I am trying to avoid having the hinge and typical rain diverter jutting out from the side of the camper. So I have made the conscious decision to use a piano style hinge with custom trim holding a strip of EPDM rubber.

The result has yet to be seen, but I am hopeful that it will work out well.
