Hi All,

I'm about to purchase the wood for my Tiny Trailer project. I've got my BOM figured out except for one thing - the spars.

My camper is 72" wide, so I'm trying to figure out the best size for the spars. Do you think 1x2's would be fine, or should I get 2x4's and rip them? It will not be insulated, and I'll be using 1/4" plywood for the roofing.

Hi Steve,

I used Southern Yellow Pine 2 X 2's I got at Home Depot. (not white wood) It was a fairly hard wood that held screws really well. I used 1/4" red oak plywood on the top exterior of my tear and I think it would have bowed if I had used anything smaller for spars.

my 33'er had 1x3's for spars and it's 7'6'' wide, so i'd say 1x2's would be fine.

Steve,
I split mine of 2x6 so I could get a straight board. Used white wood and Mike put his 200 pounds across it with no sag. (had to get the screws in) We are 76" across. Made them a real 1" so 1 1/2" side down. Makes for a good place to lay insulation. Used 1 1/2 pink stuff. Spars every 12 inches.

Thanks guys. It seems almost 50/50 with the 1x2 or 2x2 lumber. I was sort of in the middle too. I think I'll give the 1x2's a shot. I can go with the 2x2's later if I need to, but that will save me a little weight on the build as well. I appreciate your feedback. I'll be making sawdust tomorrow! Camping by Thanksgiving.

I went 1 by 2 poplar, laminated(glued) and doubled up for each spar, making for true 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 spars.

Like Ira, mine are poplar 1X2s wide side down. I put them 1ft apart on center.
