Making 1/4 round bend to fit the ceiling/wall join....

Steve W and folks,

I didn't have anything on hand but I bought one piece of the bendy faux wood quarter round at HD and tried it on the inside curve of the ceiling at the front--it shattered into three pieces So, I think it will be wet or steamed wood for me....

and Jersey Jim in Savannah....Steve Wolverton was earlier up on the thread....

LOL! No prob - and I know nothing of bending wood.

I got this stuff to bend around the front of mine without having to steam it.


Its wood rope that I ripped in half. Only broke one piece, the second piece because the first one went in easy. Just pushed it in real slow.

I just ran it through my table saw. Its maple so it cut pretty clean.

Musta been pretty wide to start with. I have a thin blade but it takes some stuff off with it. Really pretty.

I installed the 1/4 round, soaked it about 15 hours or so. Here is a thread with some photos of my soak tray, and after the install.

Bruce, that rope looks very nice. I can't count the times I have wished I had a table saw!

Earl, your 'soaking' solution was inventive, practical and it WORKED

I took the pvc pipe my door hinges came in, wrapped one end with 'Marine Duck Tape' put a 1/4 round in it, taped it to hold it in so it wouldn't float--
looks like this:





It has been soaking over 24 hours so I will try putting it in later today, with the help of a little heat from a heat gun....

Im also starting to install mouldings on the interior and was wondering as to how it can be done?

The moulding I would like to install is wood...and the reason Im asking this is due to the curvature on the interior..and I dont think it will bend that much...

I always have the old trustworthy Sauna to steam it ....Maybe I,ll have to try that again?

Well folks, bad day Tried putting in the pine 1/4 round. Soaked it 24 hrs+ and heated it with heat gun and it still cracked!

Obviously, something is wrong here The curve is 19", proudly stolen er...borrowed from the Generic Benroy plans....so that doesn't seem like too bad a curve

It has occurred to me that I COULD cut the 1/4 round in the center of the curve and relieve most of the stress on the wood....course, that's chicken way out-- Jim

Perhaps with that sharp a curve you could try to soak a piece of coving. They make it narrow enough to look good.

Just a piece of quarter round that has the corner part cut off.

Patience is not one of my virtues...unless procrastination can be bent to mean patience Anyhow, I decided to join 'em, not fight em and found a different trim piece for the wall/ceiling join. I will post pics when I get it up...it bends fine around the curve --without soaking or heat! So, I'm a happy camper...

Yeah, forget all that steaming stuff. That's too much work.

A happy camper is the best kind of camper. Good luck with the build.
