New teardrop construction begins

Postby steve wolverton » Sun Nov 07, 2004 9:43 pm

Hello Everyone,

I just started constructing my first teardrop. I don't have any plans, just found some that I liked, and kinda winging it. :D

Great forums, I've learned a lot.

I really like the shape and look of your Teardrop. Also the web page...just great! Keep it up. You are really inspiring me.

Nice progress. I liked the lil guy shape too. Great shop! Just built my Harbor Freight trailer. I had to tear out a wall cabinet in my garage so's the trailer would fit wid da garage doh shut. Will be putting down the floor soon. We Texans ought to get a little gathering together this spring.

That trailer looks similar to what some of the guys have been talking about, eh Buford? I believe it's what Angib has under his lightweight design!

Sure does Mike. Light weight and simple. He's got the right idea. Build a teardrop trailer not a trailer for a teardrop.

Uh-Oh :o :o That sounds like you could have a problem...Hello, My name is Steve, I'm a Teardrop addict......
Welcome to the club! I looked at your journal. Looks really nice. I never thought of a boat trailer as a frame-donor!
What kind of boats have you built?..I'm cross addicted..
I've built a couple of kayaks. I'm building a second and third Tear currently. One for Mike, one for me.

I agree, a boat trailer could make a very nice base for a tear drop.... plenty of room for a box on the front..... and the tear drop should be rigid enough so it doesn't need a heavy trailer base..

Hello Everyone,

SteveH - Thanks. I'll keep posting my pictures and ideas to my site as it progresses. I'm having a lot of fun with this project.

GeorgeT - I'm up for a spring get together. That sounds like a great idea.

BufordT - It's a Sportsman trailer that was purchased along the Texas Gulf Coast. I can't remember the dealership offhand, I think it was Calvin Marine or Murry Marine in Freeport, TX. I'm happy with the trailer. It's about 5 years old now and has served me well hauling boats, and now a teardrop. They can be reached at http://www.sportsmantrailers.com. They are a bit pricey, I paid around $800 for mine. A similar trailer can be found at http://www.ezloader.com. They have stats listed for their trailers, and even have a UPS shippable one. Once you remove the winch, bunks, shorten tongue, etc. these things can lighten up quite a bit.

Steve Frederick - I've built a stich-n-glue Nick Schades 17' sea kayak. I've built a 10' Glen-L Squirt, a 19'6" Stevenson Projects Weekender sailboat, a 7'6" Sam Devlin Dinghy, and now the teardrop. I told my girlfriend if we didn't like the teardrop we could always flip it upside down and use it as a boat. :D

Holy smokes Steve, you are really working quick. It's coming along nicely! Cute web page too. What's the disco ball for?

I'll add you to the hall of fame tonight when I get home!!!

mikeschn - Thanks. I'm going to order the wood to skin the camper today. I'm taking a 1/2 day off tomorrow so I'm hoping to have it skinned tomorrow.

I'll order the epoxy/glass too, and should be able to finish the entire project in just a couple of weeks. I enjoy building, but I'd much rather be out camping in it.

And I've decided to hold off on the disco ball.

BobR - I kinda of like having a tear drop that's custom. No plans here. I imagine most people who build their own vary from the plans quite a bit too.

BTW, I updated tonight, got a little more work done before it got too dark.
