My only fear is that the plywood would split when you drive screws, nails or staples into the edges.

I wonder if sealing the edges with something would make splitting less likely to happen?

A coat of thined epoxy applied and let wick into the end grain of the plywood will definately make it stronger. We do that all the time building RC model airplanes.

I would, however, drill a pilot hole for all screws in the end grain of the ply.

3 inches wide by 8 feet?

Is that a standard cut used for something, or did it come from waste cuts?

Pilot drill the holes first should cure the splitting problem and keep the screws from wandering as well

It came from waste, they redo the floor of and old house the the stud wasn't at standart distance so by cutting 3 inch at each plywood they can screw it on the stud
