Steel

ok...here's a good one for ya.....the thickness of flat steel and angle iron is measured in fractions of an inch...i.e 1/8, 3/16, 1/4 etc.....but boxed or tubular steel is measured as "gauge thickness"...is there a conversion formula?...a conversion chart???? or a "rule of thumb" to go by?

Here's a thickness gage table that might help...

And another hint for converting

Postby Rebel » Sat Jul 03, 2004 4:25 am

1/16 inch is .0625 % of an inch
1/8 inch is .125 % of an inch
3/16 inch is .1875 % of an inch

11 gauge, as Mike's chart shows, is .1196 % of an inch - or just under 1/8 inches.

How heavy is 2 x 2 11 gauge steel? Heres a link....

http://www.pacific-recycling.com/SStube.html

This chart shows weights per linear foot for round, square, and rectangular steel tubing.

For 11 gauge 2 x 2 square tubing, it shows 3.07 pounds per running foot.
For 11 guage 1 x 3 rectangular, it shows it also weighs 3.07 pounds.

Of course, that means a 20 length of 2 x 2 square tube steel will weigh 61.4 pounds. This would be helpful in figuring your basic frame for the trailer without weighing.
