asphalt emulsion

Postby mercy » Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:41 pm

asphalt emulsion.
crack filler.
roofing tar (kidding!)

the crack filler seems to feel really dense, goopy and hard to work with. i can only find the emulsion is in 5 gallon buckets. (it's not going to take all 5, right? right?) has anyone tried anything other than the emulsion?

does anybody need any? looks like i'll be swimming in extra soon (i hope).

Courtney, Get asphalt (roof coating) in gallon pails at Home Depot or other home center. You'll only need the gallon and not all of it, if that!
I used about half to do two coats on the bottom of the woody(5x10). The first goes on goopy and takes a lot to do. The second will be easier and takes less.
The product I used was "Henry Asphalt Roof Coating", Non Fibered.Image

What is the easiest way to put the emulsion on? Brush, squegee,??

Do you try to save the applicator when done, or is it trash?

Mike, in the picture above, is that the bottom of the base? I was going to do something similar, but put plywood on both sides and just put the roof coating on the bottom and sides (not inside)... was going to put insulation in the pockets. So, it would wind up 4'x8'x2" thick.

Now I'm thinking weight and might not put any ply on the bottom and not insulate it. There will be a foam mattress on top which might be enough insulation..... So I would wind up with something similar to the picture, just turned over. That would leave coated ribs and ply open from the bottom.

Yes, that the bottom that I am coating in that photo. I let it dry for a week, and then I flipped it over. It took that long because it was so cold in the garage.

That trailer is designed for 3 seasons camping, the walls are solid plywood and the floor has no insulation. If I were to winterize it, I would probably add 1 1/2" extruded polystyrene insulation in the floor, and leave it exposed to the elements.

But yes, you can leave the coated ribs and ply open from the bottom!

I went to home depot and bought the henry product. It is drying, after being applied early this afternoon.

Can anyone give me a clue (the can didn't) how it takes to become 'handelable'? Overnight, 1 day, 2 days?

We have a suberb drying day today. Warm and low humidity.

I'd like to get the deck back on Sunday some time.

thin areas that soak it up quick dry in a day easy,,thick areas may take a few days,,and then even you will get it on ya handling the boards or floor,,,I am not sure it ever completely dries so that it wont get all over ya,,,,those messy clothes ya wore to put it on,,slip them back on to flip the floor assembly over,,once its down its sort of out of sight out of mind,,,
little hint,,,if ya get it on something ya want to take out,,ie ya tracked some in on a rug,,,use WD-40,,spray some on and blot it up,,,takes out asphalt from cloth, rugs and some clothes

Walmart carries a "rubberized undercoating) product in aerosol form. I have used it on my Willys jeep before. I wonder if it'd work good as a undercoater for a TD? Its in a spray so it'd be easier to apply, less messy. :)

Had another thought, anyone think about Herculiner? Its a epoxy paint with rubber granules in it. Used it on my M100 military trailer bed. I bet it'd work... It is $25 for 1/2 a gallon which would more than cover the td botton. Autozone and any other Auto-whatever place would carry it.

anything that is gonna seal the wood,,not crack, peel or let go will work,,ya just trying to seal the bottom perminately from the elements and anything else the tires throw up,,at $5.00 a gallon the asphalt coating is cheap, easy to apply,,protects, and should be maintenance free fir a bunch of years,,

The consensus for undercoating floor is Henry's roof coating from home depot at $7/gallong.
