Kuffle Creek Trailer Modifications

Postby Jimbo » Mon Jul 26, 2004 6:23 pm

Hey all, the Kuffel Creek mods for the HF trailer call for using a piece of Douglas Fir for a replacement crossmember. I picked up a piece of steel angle today and thought it might work better. Any thoughts?

Jimbo, Thats exactly what I used. Don't know if it made any difference but I felt it would make it stiffer.

I'm not using the Kuffle Creek plans but I'm told I've done the same thing they call for in using one of the cross-members cut in half to secure the two four-foot sections of frame together.

In any case, I just did without that particular cross-member and it works fine. You can see my frame here.

I should have added that if you look at my frame, you'll see that the missing crossmember is at the foot of the bed where there won't be much weight. The galley and the head and center sections of the bed are all supported by cross-members. I suppose I could have supported that by adding a cross-member on my wooden base frame to correspond to the place where the missing frame member would have been, but I didn't.

It has now travelled about two thousand miles and it hasn't been a problem.

Hi Jimbo

I deid the same think used a 2" angle for the cross member, and I did not cut off the 2 1/8 in .. not making the cruve at the front.

best of luck John

Did you all mount the axle over top of the leaf springs like the mods call for or keep them under the springs?
