How to get the nut back up there?

The struts that support the tongue box have had the nuts fall off. There is a U shape channel that is tig welded to the box with four holes that could be used to adjust height and there is a bolt attached to the side of the strut. The problem is getting the nuts up in the channel and holding them there so they can be engaged by the bolt.
Any advice on how to get this back where it belongs will be appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you need to do, but if you can get an appropriate wrench in there you can put duct tape on the back of the wrench to keep the nut from pushing out the other side when it contacts the bolt.

You might need to fish the bolt through the channel and have the nut on the outside. Here is a video on making a bolt wire leader....homemade wire leader video To use the leader, you first feed the wire in the bolt hole and run it out the end, then attached the bolt, and draw the bolt through the hole.

A lot of times I have used believe it or not buble gum on a open end wrench. One time I used buble gum on a pipe cleaner just to get the threads started

The "bolt" is attached permanently to the strut, the channel has 1/2" width on the inside, I may have to fashion a wrench to fit. I am betting the channel was welded with the strut already attached.

I would not be surprised if there was a clip holding the stud on to the gas spring that is hard to see. I took aloe at mine and it was hard to see but it was there

I've attached a nut to the end of a dowel and caught a thread to start it.
Tape, gum or just thread it onto the dowel... Otherwise, what size is
the bolt?

Would a long nut used to attach threaded rod together in electrical
work work?

I have a magnetic extension rod that I got at an auto supply store. I used to use it fish out the coins kids accidentally dropped down a narrow metal grate cover outside the classroom door. It looks like a pen ( or a radio antennae that has been collapsed ) and it wasn't very costly, and it's fun to play around with.
