How much Sikaflex do I need?

Postby capnTelescope » Tue Jun 24, 2014 10:37 pm

I'm getting ready to skin my CNC Build, aluminum over plywood. Sikaflex 221 seems to be the goo of choice around here. How many of the 10 oz tubes should I get for my 4 ft high x 10 ft long walls? That would be something less that 40 sqft per wall.

I don't want to buy too much, or worse yet, not enough. :frightened:
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Don't know exactly how you are planning to attach your aluminum, but mine floats on the top and sides, is fastened on the edges with al angle, screws and sikaflex. I did not glue of sikaflex the aluminum to the ply, but if i recall, i ended up needing 4 tubes.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

I'm not sure where the Sikaflex went. was it around the edges of the Al?

Since I floated the alum sheets, I put sika under all the angle on the edges, all the exterior trim, a dab in every exterior fastener screw hole. I feel the sika justifies its cost, but as with every other sealer, age and our gorgeous Texas heat takes its toll. After 7 years, I need to remove all the trim and reseal, but I think that would be the case with most any sealer. I think the sika has held up pretty well, and I will be using the same when I do the reseal.

Thank you, Tony. I'm pretty sure I've got it now.

Judging by the number of people reading the thread and not answering the question, I wasn't the only one asking the same question.

Thanks, again. My Al arrives Monday. See my Tear get skinned on my build thread!

I'm keeping up with your progress and look forward to meeting at the LCG.

It's exciting to get to the skinning stage. But . . . I'll bet I spent as much time on the metal work as I did the rest of the whole trailer. Lots of fabrication, but you've already shown that isn't a challenge for you.

You're right. Suddenly, I just want to rush forward. Can't let the workmanship suffer.

 This whole project has been a challenge from the beginning. Keeps me on my toes.

I took a peek at your album. You did some really nice work on your tear. And the kayaks... Very nice!

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at LCG. I had to leave all my camping buddies back in Kahleefoornya, and need some new ones.

Sad to loose time with old friends, but I'm sure you'll make plenty of new camping buddies here. Lots of good folk in the south central group.
