How wide is your door?

Postby jonesnforcampin » Mon Jul 28, 2014 11:26 pm

So we went to our family reunion and used a pop up trailer. The entery door is really narrow. We have an idea for the width and height for our camper, but just curious what others have done.

Mine is about 34 inches. That was as big as I could make it and not have it interfere with other components.

Mine is 32-1/2 inches at the rough opening allowing 1/4 inch gap at each side, meaning that the door itself is 32 inches. The seal flange takes away 5/8 inch all the way around not including the trim that the seal is attached to. So the clear opening is going to be about 31 inches.

Kharn- So how is it getting in and out? I'm not familar with your build, is it one you can stand inside.

KCStudly- You bring up a good point, if I want my opening a certain size I need to calculate my seals and other things that will change it...

48Rob- That's a nice wide door, how tall did you go?

Overall I'm wanting to not lose as much wall space as possible because I always worry about strength. But, I tend to over engineer stuff so I could probably go bigger on the door and be fine.

I was just so amazed at how that little door would RUIN a camper for me.

Here's my build thread, mine's a Weekender profile, not a standy. Getting in and out of the 26" width isn't bad and I'm 300lb.

27 1/2" wide by 39 1/2" high. When building, cut opening was 28x40"; trim, seals, & hinges reduced that to current dimensions. Wife & I have no problems entering/exiting but we're not large folks. Our grandaughter & her 300#+ husband used the TD on a couple of trips to NASCAR & he loves it so much he's claimed it for when we don't use it anymore (as if! ;) ). Apparently he had no problem getting in or out...

From what I have seen, standie doors can get down to about 24 inches and still pass. With a TD you need a little more room to do the "sit and spin" (i.e. to swing your legs in once seated).

Thanks everyone this really helps! We did a mock up with cardbord and clamps and came up with 26 wide and 39 tall but after using the pop up we not sure. I also did not think about trim taking up space. The kids and I are pretty small but my hubby is taller and has brood shoulders so we want to make sure we go big enough but not over do it. :-)

Jones,

I don't remember for sure, but think it was about 48"

My trailer is more of a standie than a teardrop, but having a larger door on a teardrop is very comfortable.
The only downfall to going too large is throwing proportions off and making it look odd/bad.
